  3. The stem for regular verbs in the pretérito is the infinitive stem. Tomar tom- Hablar habl- Comer com- Beber beb- Abrir abr- Salir sal-

  4. -aste -ó -amos -asteis -aron Pretérito endings for -ar verbs are:

  5. -iste -ió -imos -isteis -ieron Pretérito endings for –er / -ir verbs are:

  6. REMEMBER: • accents on the “yo” form and the “él / ella / Ud.” form • -ar / -ir “nosotros” form is the same in present and pretérito

  9. Verbs ending in -car, -gar, and-zar have a spelling change in the “yo” form of the pretérito. Unos Irregulares: buscar tocar practicar pagar jugar llegar almorzar empezar comenzar

  10. The “yo” form of the pretérito changes to conserve the sound of the infinitive: -car -gar -zar “-qué” “-gué” “-cé” “tocé” “jugé” “rezé”

  14. Un poco extra (spell changes) • Oír, caer, and verbs ending in –EER and – UIR (but not in –guir) have the following change in the él and ellos forms of the preterite : i y • (Note the accent mark on the í of the endings in the other forms)

  15. Oír = oí , oíste, oyó, oímos, oyeron • Caer = caí, caíste, cayó, caímos, cayeron • Leer = leí, leíste, leyó, leímos, leyeron • Construir = construí, construíste, construyó, construímos, construyeron

  16. Preterite of Stem changing –ir verbs Only –ir stem- changing verbs have a stem change in the preterite. If an –ir verb, such assentirseor dormirse has a stem change in its present tense forms, then it also has a stem change in the preteritebut ONLY in the third person forms !!!!!

Preterite of Stem changing –ir verbs • Other verbs that follow this pattern are : • Morirse – to die (o  u) Preferir – to prefer (e  i) Seguir – to follow (e  i) • Divertirse – to have fun ( e  i) • Pedir – to ask for • (e  i) • Servir - to serve • (e  i) • Vestirse – to get dressed (e  i)

  19. Preterite of Stem changing –ir verbs • Ej. Los niñosse murieronde la risacuando me vieron (The children died of laughter when the saw me.) • Los jugadoresse divirtieronmucho en el partido. (The players had fun at the game) • El entrenador les pidió a los jugadoresganar el partido.

  20. Un poco extra… • The verb reirse (to laugh) uses accent marks in the preterite when the I is pronounced as a separate syllable. Me reí Tereíste Serió Nosotrosreímos Se rieron Sonreír will follow the Same pattern!!!!
