  8. Today’s Focus • Self-Esteem and the negative impact it can have on teens Issues that teens are facing: • Sexual Activity • Underage Drinking • Drugs • Cutting • Choking Game • Body Image/Eating Disorders

What is Self Esteem? • Do you believe you are successful? • How do you see yourself (your self image)? • How do you feel about your strengths and weaknesses? • What do you think of your social status?  • How do you relate to others? • Can you make your own decisions? A lack of choices leads to low self esteem. SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

Research • Direct and distinct link between mothers and daughters • Mothers can help daughters withstand the powerful influence of a media and celebrity culture that undermines their sense of beauty and self-worth • Other influencing factors include; peers, boyfriends, celebrities, and messages from the media

  11. Self-Esteem Bucket • Our self-esteem bucket starts out full when we’re born • Negative beliefs about ourselves cause us to poke holes in our buckets or self-esteem

  12. What Does This All Mean? • The way we feel about ourselves has a huge affect on the way we treat ourselves and others, and on the kinds of choices we make. • Low self-esteem is one of the leading causes of teens making poor choices • Especially females

  13. Sex and Underage Drinking • A variety of risky behaviors, including smoking, drugs, and the onset of sexual activity tend to occur when alcohol is involved • Many girls lose their virginity while drunk – and don’t use protection • Many teens start drinking in junior high • Teen sex combined with alcohol use is increasing

  14. So Why Do Kids Drink? • To fit in and belong • Feel grown-up • Be able to let loose • Make themselves feel better • Please a group or stop being shy • Find out what drinking is all about • Be defiant

  16. Female Sexual Activity Statistics in the United States • 9th grade females who have had sex: 29.3% • 10th grade females who have had sex: 44.0% • 11th grade females who have had sex: 52.1% • 12th grade females who have had sex: 62.4% • And its on the INCREASE!!!!

What Can You Do? • Strengthen a culture of personal responsibility regarding sex, getting pregnant, and bringing children into the world • Support responsible policies that will increase the use of contraception • Provide more education to teens, parents, and young adults • Encourage them to take sex and pregnancy seriously • Stress personal responsibility and respectful relationships, and include extensive information about contraception SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

  20. Classroom Activities • Activities will help students comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. • Help students demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

  21. Abstinence Bingo • Three signatures in a row or diagonal will constitute bingo or fill out the entire sheet • Write name on top of sheet so not lost in the shuffle • Read over the statements in the boxes • Object of the game is to obtain signatures in all 9 boxes • Person can only sign a box if they can answer “know how to” or fall into the category indicated. No Cheating! • No person may sign more than one box on a page. You may not sign any boxes on your own sheet SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

Sexuality Alphabet • Sex and Sexuality • Point out that sex is only one part of sexuality • Small-group brainstorm about sexuality • Students will write words that come to mind when they hear or see the word sexuality • One word for each letter of the alphabet • Some terms may be slang or street names • Teacher discretion of letting students say the words SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

  23. Sexuality Alphabet cont… • Potential processing questions • What terms were mentioned most • What terms have a positive connotation? Negative connotation? Neutral? • What terms were related to males? Females? Both sexes? • Were there terms that someone never heard of before? • Point out that sexuality is NOT just having sex • It is part of who we are as human beings • It can be a positive part of life (love, intimacy, caring) • Or negative (STD’s, unwanted pregnancy, rape) SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

That’s My Line • Students identify persuasive “lines” that are commonly used to persuade someone into sexual activity • Students practice refusal and peer pressure-resistance skills • Read the “pick-up lines” • Class rates them on a scale of 1 to10 • Discuss persuasion….what is the point? • What makes someone a good persuader? A poor persuader? • Why might it be difficult to turn down someone who’s trying to persuade you to do something? • Groups will write lines that a teenager could use to try to persuade another into sexual activity • The other groups will write lines that could be used to say “No” to the persuasive lines SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

  25. That’s My Line cont…. • This is a competition • Have groups choose 5-7 “pick-up lines” and refusal lines and post on the board • Judge the lines • Persuasion lines • Most original, most often used, most effective when participants are in love • Refusal lines • Most original, most effective, least embarrassing, least sincere, least effective; it will never work!, most effective way to say “No.” • Conclude by pointing out that the first step in making a good refusal is to be able to recognize lines • Extension activities: • Have groups role play the “pick-up lines and refusal lines • Have groups create a song, rap, or poem and perform to the class • Interview students in the school who have chosen to remain abstinent. What lines have they been able to refuse? • Have students write their own refusal lines that they would be comfortable with to use in a situation where assertiveness would be needed. Contraceptive Commercials • Students identify different methods of contraception • Students make a “commercial” for a specified method of contraception • Students identify advantages and disadvantages of different methods of contraception • Procedure: • Each group will have a contraception method, along with written information about the method • Groups read about their method and answer the questions on the worksheet • Groups design a 1-minute television commercial to market their method to teens • Commercial must emphasize what makes the method effective and easy to use • Commercial must contain the warnings about the produce; health risks and disadvantages. What Are They Selling? • Students will analyze advertisements to try to determine what product is being sold • Students will discuss the impact of sexuality in advertising on their own behaviors • Partners go around the room to each picture and examine the advertisement. • Determine what product the advertisement is marketing • Write answer on worksheet • Process Questions: • What was the similarity among the advertisements? • Are the advertisements an aberration or are they examples of the type of advertising that is “out there?” • Why do companies use sexuality in their advertising? • What is the impact of all the sexuality on young people’s lives, if any?   28. What Are They Selling cont. • The media is all around us. Some say that Americans are exposed to more than 3,000 advertising images in one single day. Companies use sexuality in their marketing campaign • The advertisements that use sexuality may subconsciously encourage premature sexuality among young people. SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!

  29. Music With a Message • Select a song that has a message about sex • Type the words to the song (most lyrics can be found online) also include the artist, who recorded it, the album or CD it came from, and the year recorded • Make copies for everyone in the class • On a separate sheet of paper answer the following questions to hand in • What do you think the song is about? • Why did you choose the song? What does it mean to you? • What is the message(s) you get from this song? Does this song send a positive or negative message about sexuality? Why? • Cite at least three specific lines from the song that reflect this message • How do you think young people react when they hear this song? Are they persuaded by the song? Do they take comfort in the song? What emotions and/or behaviors are affected? • How do you think adults react when they hear this song? Is it the same as young people? SWPRSC…Celebrating 20 Years!
