  1. Web CAPP Report Doug Rutledge Indiana University of Pennsylvania Monday, November 21, 2005

  2. Introduction • IUP has created a self-service option to display a web CAPP report to replace the SunGard SCT delivered report. This presentation will explain why we created this process and what was involved.

  3. About IUP • 14,000 students; 1,800 employees • Largest Member of PASSHE • 3 campuses; 1 center; 1 academy • Doctoral I • Clock-hour programs

  4. Banner at IUP • Live with 8 baseline modules and 6 Self Service products since 2000. • Banner 7.x – October 2005 • Oracle 9i Database • Oracle Application Server 10g • Sun Solaris – DB servers • INB Servers (4)

  5. Topics of Discussion • What Is CAPP? • Need For Web Report • Solution • Issues • Future Plans • Summary • Questions And Answers

  6. What Is CAPP? • Curriculum Advising and Program Planning - Degree Audit • Degree Evaluation (Compliance) • A comparison of a student’s coursework against a specific set of program requirements, including transfer credits, substitutions, waivers and in-progress coursework

  7. What Is CAPP? • Answers questions such as: • What are the requirements for the given program? • What courses has the student taken? • Which requirements have and have not been met?

  8. What Is CAPP? • Tool for advising students: • Within their current program • Who are contemplating changing their major, adding a minor, etc. (“what if” scenarios) • Simplify graduation clearance

  9. Need For Web Report • Problems with SCT delivered report: • Too long – 6-31 pages • Detail report too wide – had to scroll over to see entire report • Had to print landscape - did not look professional

  10. Need For Web Report • Web is only interface to CAPP for faculty, advisors, and students – they could run evaluations, but report was not useful • Shorten SCT report? • Our director contacted SCT Product Manager • Communications broke down

  11. Solution • Created our own report • Rolled out January 2005 • Utilized customized client reports • Faculty feedback very positive • CAPP utilized for other areas • PDE – state requirements • NCATE - accreditation

  12. Solution • Improvements/Enhancements: • Added SGASTDN information to report • Changed information text to give users directions/instructions • Groups were not used • Shortened report tremendously • They were not working anyway

  13. Solution • Replaced existing links • “Previous Evaluations” now “IUP Previous Evaluations” • “Current Enrollment” now “Your Current Program” and “Advisee Current Program” to avoid confusion • Used SQL to make this easier

  14. Solution Evaluation Type SCT Report IUP Report Undergraduate 23 pages 4 pages UG w/ PA Certification 31 pages 5 pages Graduate 6 pages 2 pages

  15. Issues • Upgrade could present problems • Previous evaluations page uses SCT functions, information text, and logic • Major changes in CAPP could disrupt our report • Created in version 6.2, all right in 7.1 • Deans now want customized report for each department

  16. Future Plans • Roll out to students • February 2006 • Currently enabled for faculty and advisors • Will only have to activate an SCT menu item • Add major fields to student information • Want to see double majors

  17. Summary • Creating our own web CAPP report allowed us to expand upon SCT’s report while reducing the overall size • The university community is very pleased with the new report, because it easily provides extremely helpful information

  18. Questions And Answers • Questions?
