Brief History • The Philippines • was discovered in March 1521 (by Ferdinand Magellan -a Portuguese explorer) • was named after King Phillip II of Spain • was under the Spanish Occupation from 1521-1898 (377 years) • The Treaty of Paris 1898 resulted in the Spanish Empire’s surrendering control of the Philippines to the United States of America. • In accordance with the treaty, Spain Surrendered the Philippines to the United States for a payment of twenty million dollars

Geography – the Philippines • is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. • The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands • (only 1/3 of the islands have been named) • 73rd largest country in the world • Divided in 3 regions • Luzon to the north • Visayas in central • Mindanao in the south

Climate - tropical • The Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and as such, it is prone to earthquakes and typhoons. • The latest typhoon to hit the Philippines is Hiayan (Yolanda),a and it is the strongest typhoon ever recorded in history. • Monsoon or typhoon could come anytime of the year but mostly during the months of March to September. • Average temperature is in the 80-90 degrees F in the metropolitan or densely populated areas during the months of October to February.

Education • The Educational system in the Philippines was patterned from Spain and the United States. • However, after the liberation of the Philippines in 1946, the system changed. • The Department of Education administers education in the Philippines. • 6 years of Elementary education (starts at age 6 years old) • 4 years of High School (starting at age 12 years old) • 4-5 years of Baccalaureate

  15. …education continued • The private institutions are mostly run by the Catholics, while the public schools are run by the government • The University of the Philippines is the “national university” of the Philippines – 1908 • The University of Santo Thomas, founded in 1611, is the oldest university in Asia, and the largest Catholic university in the world • ISU has a current MOU or Memorandum of Agreement with • Far Eastern University (FEU) Manila. Founded in 1928. • Famous Alumni was former President Corazon Aquino (first woman president in the Philippines, first woman president in Asia)

People, Culture, Religion • Filipinos – are people of the Philippines • Close family ties – children are not obliged to leave the home, unless they want to, even after they finish their education, or when they get married. In fact, when the children get married, there is always one person to stay at home (even if this child is married and have own family) so that this child can take care of the aging parents. • Hospitable – everyone is welcome! They are interested in you! In fact, if you visit someone’s home, you cannot leave the home without having a meal with them!

  17. …people, culture, religion continued… • Fun-loving – there is always a reason to celebrate and it involves food, dancing, singing! • Language – Tagalog and English • There are over 50 dialects • Foreign language in the Philippines are Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Malay and Spanish • Religious – The Philippine is a Christian country. • Approximately 80% are Catholics. • Catholicism was introduced in the Philippines having been occupied by Spain from 1521-1898
