  2. What is Student Worksheet Application? • Student Worksheet is a web-based application for students. • Allows the students to view their worksheet on the web by using Dowling College banner-web application’s username and password with the help of simple web browser.

Status of this Project • The status of this project is not complete. • This project has a strong idea about what the team wants to do. • The project has a user manual for everyone to read and get information about it. • The project has a system design for the developers to understand how the system works. • This project is a almost continue project of Student Advisement System (November 20, 2002)

What is an actual Student Worksheet? • An actual student worksheet is a just paper that contains information about classes that the students take, took and are taking. • The students usually gets their worksheet when they first register to the school. • The worksheet needs to be update before or after every semester.

Why do the student would want to use this application? • As we said; The worksheet is just a paper… • Students usually lose their worksheet for some reasons. • Students are usually busy with their classes, homework assignments, midterms, finals, etc. • Every student needs their worksheet before or after the semester. • With this application, the students do not have to worry about saving their worksheet paper all the time.

  6. Worksheets in Dowling College? • The worksheet until today is only in form of paper • Not up-to date with the current requirements of the department • All the information in worksheet is available in Dowling Web site but they are scattered all over the place

The Problems… • Students have to go to the Students Service Center every semester before registration because they do not have a worksheet or they do not have a up-to-date worksheet. • The information that the staffs at Students Service Center have is in similar condition to the ones on the web site, so there's always a confusion. • Students Service Center is overly crowded at registration times and students usually have to wait much longer than the actual time it take to have their classes registered.

The Solution that comes with this project… • The Solution that comes with this project is that we think that the students worksheet should be available online since Dowling College have all the information on the web. • This web application would allow the students to check for all available classes that is being offered in next term.

  9. User Manual of The Project • The needed things in order to use this application; • A computer with the operating system. (Linux, Mac, Windows, etc..) • A web browser on that computer. (Firefox, Safari, Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.. ) • An internet connection on that computer.

User Manual of The Project • Starting the program; • Open a web browser and type the link below in order to run this web application; http://arcib.dowling.edu/pocss08/login • When the students type this link and hit the enter, the student may see two different screen. • Welcome Page – If everything is fine or • Error Page – If the students tools have a problem • Check the link that you typed was correct as needs to be • Check your internet connection

Login Page… • In order to go to “Login Page” the student has to click on “Click Here to Proceed” button on Welcome Page. • Login Page allows the students to login the system. • Once in this page the user can enter the user name and password and click on Login. • Anyone with valid account with Dowling’s “banner-web” services can use their username and password to login the program. • If anyone who does not know their username and password would click the link that says “I do not know my username and password” and get information about how to get their user name and password.

Login Page’s Buttons… • On Login Page there is also “Login” and “Login Help” button. • The student clicks Login button after puts the username and password in order to login the system. • The student clicks “Login Help” button if the student wants to get help about the how to login the system.

  16. “Login Help” page on Login Page Login Help Intended User: Every student registered for the semesters that have a valid banner-web account can use this program. What is username and password:The username is the combination of three letters followed by one or more digits. It is automatically the next morning you register for Dowling. You can find your username by visiting; http://username.dowling.edu You can generate a temporary password or change your password from the above site. Who should the user contact if the username and password is invalid: If the username and password is invalid, contact registration office or Students Services. The authors do not have the direct access or permission to create or remove records form banner-web.

Mistyping either username or password on Login Page • Everyone makes mistake. • The students may mistype the username and password. • Incase of the Invalid Login there would be an error message reminding page (Invalid Login Page) for the users about the error that has just occurred and the page would be re-directed to the login page.

Major, Minor and Catalog Year Selection Page • On Successful login the use would be asked to choose for their major, minor and catalog year. • On this page student can select intended major and minor from the drop down menus. • The majors and minor intended are irrelevant of the class that the student have taken and output worksheet depend on this selection irrelevant of the classes that anyone has taken up to this point. • If the user one major and intend to graduate in another major, all the classes would be transferred into electives section in the worksheet. • Logout button would log the user out and the Help button would redirect the user to the entire user manual on the web

Student Worksheet Page... • After the students has selected the major and minor or major or minor and year then the students can see their current student worksheet in the browser. • The page in the html format, the information that the students see would be gathered from the banner-web temporarily and lost after closing the browser. • Depending upon the list of classes the student has take over period of time the student can see the filled up worksheet that resembles the paper worksheet that the college implements. • For the advisement for upcoming classes student should click in the link below the worksheet.

Click here advisement for upcoming classes link on Student Worksheet Page • Once the students click on that link; then they would be able to see the list of all classes that they can register for the upcoming semester. • The list would be generated depending upon the list of classes that the student has completed and the prerequisites for the all the upcoming classes. • For the purpose of advisement, the program would only advise the student for the major, minor and core classes. • The elective class should be selected by the students.

Logout Page… • Logout button would log the students out. • The application recommend that when the students done with the student worksheet application, they should use log out button before closing the web browser. • On Logout page the students can send an email to the authors if they have any comments or question by clicking e-mail link. • If the student would want to re-login to the system again they can click the link called “click here to login”.

  34. Purpose of The Project • The purpose of this web applications is; • An actual student worksheet I Dowling College is a just paper and the students usually lose this paper. So, the basic purpose of this project is having this paper on the web. • This application will help; • The students in Dowling College. • The staffs at Student Service Center in Dowling College

Developing Tools • Java : Java is a programming language originally developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems' Java platform. • JSP : Java Server Pages (JSP) is a technology that lets you mix regular, static HTML with dynamically-generated HTML. • Tomcat : Tomcat is a free, open-source implementation of Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies developed under the Jakarta project at the Apache Software Foundation. • XML : XML is a markup language for documents containing structured information. • HTML : HTML is a computer language devised to allow website creation. • MySQL : MySQL is a database. A database defines a structure for storing information.

Security of this Project • The information about the students will not store in anywhere. • The hackers cannot have the students information because this project does not store any information about the student. • The information about the students are from the banner-web page of Dowling college.
