Basic Parts of Speech • Noun – Person, Place, Thing, or Idea • Mrs. Bannecker, Parkway North, desk, happiness • Pronoun – A word that takes the place of a noun • She, he, it, him, her • Articles – A, an, the; these proceed a noun in a sentence. • Adjectives – A word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun. • We lived in a red brick house.

Basic Parts of Speech, cont. • Verbs – An action or a state of being • Paul rides the bus every day. • Paul was an avid reader. • Adverbs – A word that modifies, or further describes, a verb, an adjective, or another adverb • He waved wildly to get her attention. • The shirt he wore to the party was extremely bright. • Conjunctions – A word that joins two or more words, phrases, or clauses. • For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so • Prepositions – Connects a noun or pronoun to another part of the sentence • Across, to, of, from, in, into, between, behind, with, within, without

Clauses • All sentences must contain a subject (doer of an action), a verb, and a complete thought (Independent Clause). • Clause: A group of related words containing a subject and a verb • Dependent Clause: A clause that needs an independent clause to complete its meaning • When my friends and I went to the mall. • Independent Clause: A clause that can stand alone as a complete thought • We spent a lot of money.
