  1. DESCARTE Cogito ergo sum: “I THINK, THEREFORE I AM.”

  2. ESSENTIAL IDEAS • DIRECT OBSERVATION FREQUENTLY DECIEVES US; BECAUSE OF THIS WE CAN NEVER BE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT DREAMING OR HALLUCINATING • Consider:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te6qG4yn-Ps • DIRECT OBSERVATION FREQUENTLY DECIEVES US; BECAUSE OF THIS WE CAN NEVER BE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT DREAMING OR HALLUCINATING

  3. ESSENTIAL IDEAS • DESPITE THAT EVERYTHING IN OUR EXPERIENCES MAY DECEIVE US, THEY ARE STILL OUR EXPERIENCES WHICH PROVE WE EXIST. • HENCE: “I THINK, THEREFORE I AM.”

  4. ESSENTIAL IDEAS • GOD MUST ALSO EXIST BECAUSE THIS PERFECT BEING MUST HAVE IMPLANTED IN US AN AWARENESS OF ITSELF. • IF WE PLACE OUR TRUST IN GOD, AND NOT IN OUR DECEIVING SELVES, WE CAN BE CERTAIN OF TRUTH BASED ON OUR MINDS.

  5. “COGITO” is based on the following logic… • THOUGHTS EXIST. • DOUBTING IS A KIND OF THINKING. • TRYING TO DOUBT THAT YOU ARE THINKING JUST DOESN’T WORK. • HUMANS, THEREFORE, MUST BE ‘DUALIST’

  6. “DUALISM” ideology asserts that… • HUMANS ARE SPIRITUAL MINDS OR SOULS INHABITING MATERIAL BODIES. • BODIES ARE LIKE MACHINES THAT EVENTUALLY PERISH. • MINDS ARE IMMORTAL. • HOW THE MIND AND BODY INTERACT IS NOT ENTIRELY CLEAR.

  7. To show some understanding, please: • Read the section on Descarte and record a philology entry. This can be found on pp. 84-89. • For tomorrow, be prepared to do some more thinking about and searching for examples of how man’s senses can deceive him.
