  20. Teaching the Teachers

  21. Incarnation -God becoming man -not part God, part man-100% both!!! -hypostatic union -heresies against: -Docetism-Christ not really human -Arianism-Christ not really God -Council of Nicea 325 AD -Christ declared homoousious -same substance as the Father -Why?????? -for us to know the love of God -to be an example for us -to give us inherent dignity -to save us from sin*

  22. Annunciation -Mary was betrothed to Joseph -first part of the marriage agreement -did not live together, but “cheating” still seen as adultery -Angel Gabriel appears to her - “Hail favored one” -God had her in mind since Adam and Eve!!! -Immaculate Conception -conception of Mary, NOT Jesus!!! -would not “pass on” Original Sin to her Child -remains free of sin for her whole life -Mary gives her unconditional “yes” -Fiat*

  23. -Ever-virgin -Mary never had any other kids, no sex with Joseph -”brothers and sisters” refers to close relations of Jesus -she was supposed to serve the Lord in the Temple (consecrated) -Jesus wouldn’t give his mother to John on the cross if there were others to take care of her!!! -Why is Mary so important to Catholics??? -Theotokos= God-bearer -model disciple*

  24. Birth of Jesus -Born in stable in Bethlehem -angels announce His arrival to shepherd -outcasts -Messiah announced first to those who were looked down on….foreshadowing of things to come!!! -Joseph names Jesus -sonship -Jesus=Joshua “God saves”*

  25. Epiphany -Magi visit Herod -3 wise men, probably astrologers from Persia -pagan practice -ask him where they can find Jesus -Herod is smart enough to sense trouble for himself, sent them to Bethlehem with orders to come back with info -they give Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh -represent kingship -myrrh also anoints priests and dead bodies -dream warns wise guys to avoid Herod -Herod (a Jew) rejects Jesus, but pagans accept!!! -dream also tells Joseph to run -head to Egypt -Herod kills all boys under the age of 2 -Matthew trying to point out that He is a prophet like Moses!!!*

  26. Jesus -Massacre of infants by Herod -Joseph -dreamer -son of Jacob -flees to Egypt -Jesus leads in Promised Land (Heaven) -Bethlehem -Christ born here -kingship* Old Testament Figures -Massacre of infants by Pharaoh -Joseph -dreamer -son of Jacob -sold into Egypt -Joshua leads into Promised Land (Canaan) -Bethlehem -Micah -David born here*

  27. Murder of the Holy Innocents -safe from Herod, but still live in large Jewish population under Roman rule -killed because Herod didn’t want a threat to his lifestyle
