  1. Alloy Steel Castings and Iron Castings Casting is an important manufacturing process in metal and materials industry to manufacture parts and components. The method includes pouring molten metal into the mold cavity to produce desired parts. The mold is specifically designed to produce parts in desired physical dimensions and characteristics. Let’s get a review of the iron and steel cast metal alloys to enhance the knowledge. Metal properties Cast irons and steels include a large family of ferrous alloys. They are cast to shaped, not formed by processing in solid states. Cast iron includes carbon and silicon along with different elements to form products of varying characteristics. Changing melting, casting, and heat-treating practices can produce a wide range of properties. Carbon exists in two forms: graphite and iron carbide. The mechanical and physical properties depend strongly on the characteristics of different forms of iron.

  2. Gray cast iron The steels used in investment castings are of different strengths and properties. Therefore, it’s important to consider the processing parameters required for casting of metal components. Depending on the vibration, operational loads and environmental conditions, strength requirements may vary. Other processing considerations include weldability, formability, machineability and other fabrication requirements. Carbon and alloy steel castingsare commonly known for better strength, durability, and resistance to wear and abrasion. Hence, they are widely used for high-pressure and structural applications. The additional benefit comes from cost advantages as these alloys are cost-effective and make investment casting an economical process. These alloys also minimize the need for machining, welding while producing components with high integrity and better tolerance. Carbon steel It is the most commonly used metal to manufacture products. By increasing the carbon content, the hardness and strength of steel can be increased. However, it also makes the alloy less ductile while lowering the melting point. The alloy is used for precision machine casting for equipment used in oil and gas exploration, and material handling system. Alloy cast iron It includes the castings containing elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and manganese in amounts sufficient to change the physical properties. Cast iron casting is used where it is essential to increase the strength, obtain higher wear resistance, corrosion and heat resistance. Alloy cast irons are widely used for automotive cylinders, piston rings, pistons, brake drums, and other machine tools castings. It is also suitable for parts of grinding, crushing machinery and other applications where casting should be able to resist scaling at higher temperatures. Source URL: https://bit.ly/31qIP14
