  1. SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Notes Bellwork Create vocabulary cards for the following words: Compound Pure Substance Mixture Solution

  2. SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Notes Tennessee SPI Objective: Classify common substances as elements or compounds based on their symbols or formulas. Learning Target I can interpret chemical symbols/formulas to classify substances as elements or compounds? Success Criteria I can differentiate between an element and a compound by their symbols.

  3. SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Notes • What Is An Element? • Each individual element is a unique particle called an atom • So in other words… elements are the different types of atoms • An element is a pure substance that CANNOT be broken down into a simpler substance by CHEMICAL means. 3 Li Example Lithium is an element. Lithium Here is a lithium atom. 6.9

  4. SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Notes More About Elements • The chemical symbols for elements always start with one capital letter Ex: B, C, N, O, F, etc. • These chemical symbols can be followed by one (or more) lower case letters Ex: He, Li, Be, Mg, etc. Examples of Elements -represents one hydrogen atom H hydrogen Na sodium -represents one sodium atom Ca -represents one calcium atom calcium

  5. What is a Compound? • Compoundsare formed during chemical reactions • two or more DIFFERENT elementsthat are chemically bonded via a chemical reaction to form a new substance. • The propertiesof the new substance (product) are different from the substances (reactants) that you started with. Examples of Compounds (Sodium Chloride) Sodium and Chlorine NaCl (Carbon Dioxide) Carbon and Oxygen CO2 (Glucose) Carbon, Hydrogen, & Oxygen C6H12O6

  6. SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Notes More About Compounds • Chemical formulas for compounds always contain more than one capital letter. • This is how you can tell the difference between an element and a compound… count the number of capital letters! Examples of Compounds …note that it has more than 1 capital letter H2O This is the compound called water …note that it has more than 1 capital letter C12H22O11 This the compound called table sugar …note that it has more than 1 capital letter CH3COOH This is the acidic compound called vinegar

  7. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Is this an element or a compound? Cs (Cesium) Why?...is a pure substance, consists of only one type of atom How to tell?...It only has one capital letter! F.Y.I. Used for creating electricity from light in photoelectric cells/solar panels F.Y.I. Used to regulate the seconds in atomic clocks Element

  8. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Is this an element or a compound? NaCl (Sodium Chloride) Why?... Has 2 different types of atoms bonded together How to tell?...It has more than one capital letter! F.Y.I. This compound is commonly called TABLE SALT F.Y.I. This is the substance that you sprinkle on your French Fries Compound

  9. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Is this an element or a compound? Fe (Iron) Why?...is a pure substance, consists of only one type of atom How to tell?...It only has one capital letter! F.Y.I. 4000 years ago: people mixed iron & carbon to create steel. F.Y.I. 6000 years ago: tools and weapons were first made out of iron. Element

  10. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.3 Elements and Compounds Science Is this an element or a compound? MgCl2 (Magnesium Chloride) Why?... has 2 different types of atoms bonded together How to tell?...It has more than one capital letter! F.Y.I. Used for dust control on dirt roads and to reduce wind erosion of soil. F.Y.I. Use for de-icing roads, sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. Compound
