  1. College Prep 2-5-13 Critical Thinking Topic: Cheating

  2. Lets workshop • Give copies of your stories to the people in your group • Read the stories and look for these things: • 3 kinds of characterization • Did they follow the prompt? • Showing not telling • Theme?(main idea + author’s opinion) Argument?

  3. Workshop Mark up your author’s text On the back, write a short letter detailing what worked and what didn’t work

  4. POPS!!!!! What makes a good father? As you read these vignettes, rank the dads from best (#1) to worst (#5) INDIVIDUAL

  5. PAPI!!!! Groups Get into small groups (3 or less) Convince each other of your rankings

  6. Whole Class • I will make a chart on the board…. • Lets look at the most disagreed upon person • -Who thought he was the best • -Why? (EVIDENCE!!!!!!!) • Membership or Individualized? • Debrief (strategies to come up with rankings)

  7. Targeted Work On Specific Inference Clues • We talked about ways to analyze a character on Wednesday, now lets put this into “real life” situations….and some classic literary situations • We will work on: • Actions • Dialog • Thoughts • Body language • Physical Description • How others view the character

  8. Here we GO Work through EACH person in EACH category Write the KIND of characterization at the top, the number and name next to your thoughts Actions 1) Joan………. 2) Peter…… Language 1) Mr. Smith…..

  9. What to write? • For EACH person: • List their 2 most important characteristics • Cite the piece of evidence that made you think that person had that characteristic next to the characteristic itself Actions 1) Joan -Caring- “She quickly scooped it (the dog) up”

  10. READ!!!! • Read “Harrison Bergeron” • Annotate for characterization and theme • Use this information to come up with the argument Vonnegut is making! • Think about HOW he makes the argument • 1) What kind of characterization method does he use to make his argument • 2) What type of argument (Ethos, Pathos, Logos) does he use • 3) Is it effective?

  11. Lets take ANOTHER test This time, take it as if you were Harrison!

  12. Explode the moment…Shrink the century 750 word max 15-30 min in story time
