  2. LESSION -7SECRET OF HAPPINESS • Mr. Ramesh Rao is an officer in a Government office. He is rich-man. He owns a farm on the outskirtsof Raichur and a few buildings in the city which fetchhim a fat rent. He has a small family of four, his wife, a son and a daughter. They live in a big bungalowand he has a car. His wife works in a bank, his son is a student in an engineering college and daughter is in II P.U.C. Mr. Rao has everything but he is not happy. Because, Mr Rao’s son comes home late and his daughter spends most of her time in front of the T.V. They do not listen to him. His family members do not meet together even once a day. 1. Outskirts= part of a city/town farthest from the centre 3. Fetch= get 2. Fat rent= huge rent 4. Bungalow= a big and well furnished house

  3. Mr. Rudrappa is a friend of Mr. Rao. He lives near Mr. Rao’s farm. • Mr. Rudrappa has a very big family. He has his parents, four brothers and their families. There are 29 people in the house. They live as joint family. Rudrappa and all his brothers are graduates and their wives are also educated. • Rudrappa’s father Kariappa is the head of the family who is 82 years old. His word is law. Everyone in the house respects him. Rudrappa’s mother is Somavva who is 75 years old. She is a very loving mother to everyone in the house. All children sit round her before dinner and she tells them very interesting stories. • Rudrappa’swife Revathi looks after the household. Her sisters (Rudrappa’s brother’s wives) help her in her work. In the evening all members of the family gatherin the hall and pray for fifteen minutes. Then they have dinner together. Gather= collect or assemble

  4. One hot Sunday, Mr. Rudrappa invited Mr.Raoto his house when they met. As soon as Mr Rao entered Rudrappa’s house, he was greeted by Kariappa. He gave .Rao a jug of water to wash his hands and feet. As he entered the verandah, Rudrappa’s wife gave him a tender coconut. Then they had lunch together. After lunch, Kariappa and his four sons sat with Mr. Rao chewing pan. • Mr. Ramesh Rao is an M.A. in Sociology. He had read in books that the joint family system retards development of personality and damages individual initiativeand enterprise: it also is a center for quarrels and deniesprivacy. • Mr Ramesh Rao was surprised to see the big family living happily. After a brief description about himself and his family, with lot of hesitation, Mr. Rao asked Mr Kariappa, “How do you manage your big family ?” Also he asked, “Does everyone in your family enjoy freedom ?” Hesitation= being slow to speak because of nervousness Initiative= ability to decide and act on your own without waiting for someone to tell you what to do. Denies = refuses to give Privacy= the state of being alone and not watched by someone

  5. FAMILY (Sacred Institution) • Mr Kariappatwirledhis moustache and began to speak in dignified and composed manner. Mr Kariappasaid, “Family is a sacred institution, the very foundation of Indian culture, deriving sanction from religion and social traditions. Our cultural roots have gone deep into the family system” • Mr. Kariappa looked grave and asked back what does Mr. Rao mean by freedom and then continued, “If it is absolute freedom for everyone, my family members do not enjoy such freedom. We live in a society that everyone enjoys a certain degree of freedom with restraint. Life should be happy, stable and durable. If these are our goals, no one can enjoy absolute freedom.” • Everyone needs personal care, security and help. This means that he has to sacrifice a part of his freedom for the benefits he receives. In a big family this has got to happen. Service and sacrifice are the basic principles of our culture. • We help the young by teaching them our social values and attitudesand at the same time provide them recreation. Our children go to good schools and we give them all they need. A joint family is a social insurance company” 1. Twirl= to turn something round and round 3. social insurance= support and guarantee 2.   6. After listening to Kariappa and practically being with his big family for couple of hours, he made up his mind to revise his views and make life in his small family worth living. He knew where he had gone wrong. His efforts bore fruit. • He stopped being unpleasant when he went home in the evening. • He sat with his wife and children at least for half an hour everyday • They had dinner together and they prayed before they sat down to eat. • He stopped carrying home the problems of his office. Today Mr. Rao boasts that he is the happiest man under the sun. Unpleasant= not being friendly make up his mind= decide recreation= enjoyment

Everyone needs personal care, security and help. Life should be happy, stable and durable. If these were the goals, no one can enjoy absolute freedom. 10. Question: What according to him is a joint family? Answer: According to him a joint family is a social insurance company. It is to teach social values and attitudes the children and at the same time to provide them recreation and to give them good education and all they need.
