  1. Warmup 11/6 • Your blood must be cleaned regularly. Without looking in your textbook, guess how the body cleans the blood. Think about what organs might be used to clean your blood. Do you know what medical procedure you must undergo if your body is no longer able to clean its own blood?

  2. The Urinary System http://www.brainpop.com/health/bodysystems/urinarysystem/ Chapter 24, Section 2

  3. Objectives • Describe the function of the urinary system • Explain how kidneys filter the blood • List and describe common problems with the urinary system

  4. What is the urinary system? • It is made up of organs that take wastes from the blood and send them out of the body.

  5. MAIN ORGANS (FILL IN CHART) Chapt 24 Section 2

  6. What are the main organs?

  7. HOW DO KIDNEYS CLEAN? First, you need to know some vocabulary: • nephrons: filters in kidneys that remove waste from the blood. • Urea: formed from cells using protein for energy

  8. How Kidneys Filter Blood • Blood enters the kidney through an artery and moves to nephrons • Water, sugar, urea, and other waste products move into nephron. • Nephron returns most of the water and nutrients to the blood. Wastes are left in the nephron. • Cleaned blood goes back into body. • Waste left is yellow called urine. Urine leaves kidneys through ureters. • Urine is stored in the bladder and leaves body through the urethra.

  9. How Kidneys Work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEpUQkQ-uKM

  10. Math Practice  Your kidneys filter about 2,000 L of blood each day. Your body has about 5.6 L of blood. About how many times does your blood cycle through your kidneys each day? • 350times

  11. Controlling Water How do you loose water everyday? Sweat and urine! Hormones control balance of water in, water out Antidiuretic horomone: Low water in blood=nephrons put water in blood Too much water in=body releases less ADH Diuretic: cause kidneys to make more urine

  12. Fill in the following table on kidney problems

  13. Problems With Urinary System

  14. Objectives • Describe the function of the urinary system • Explain how kidneys filter the blood • List and describe common problems with the urinary system

  15. Warmup 11/7Put the following in order: • a. Water is put back in the blood. • b. Blood goes into the kidney. • c. Water and waste go into the nephron. • d. Nephrons separate water and waste.
