Speech vs. Language • Speech: is a continuous flow of sound. • International Phonetic Alphabet: system of phonemes (symbols) that represent various speech sounds. • Language: refers to all patterns of communication that can be transmitted and received in various ways. Creation of a language must be socially acceptable by the society. • Speech • Writing • American Sign Language (ASL) • Gestures • Braille

  3. How is speech produced? • Speech is produced by a combination of shapes and movements of 6 speech organs • Larynx • Soft palate • Tongue (root, body, & tip) • Lips • Vocal folds • Nasal cavity

  4. Good/Bad Communicators State some qualities of a good communicator. Explain what makes a bad communicator.

  5. How to improve how we sound to listeners? Pace: voice speed Pitch: speaking a higher or lower level Tone: reflecting emotions in the voice Volume: loudness Intonation: the way the voice rises and falls Pause: silence can be a very effective way of communicating

Speaking in Public • There are various reasons to speak in public • Inform: designed to increase the knowledge of the listeners. • Persuade: designed to convince the listeners to hold a certain belief or to act in a certain way. • Demonstrate: (demonstrative) teaches the listeners to do something. • Entertain: speaker provides pleasure and enjoyment that make the audience laugh or identify anecdotal information.

Methods of Delivery Extemporaneous: speakers use a prepared outline, but do not read from it word for word Manuscript: speakers reads it straight off a prepared speech that has been written or typed prior to delivery. Memory: speech is memorized word for word Impromptu: speakers talk without notes with very little preparation.

Preparing a Speech • Choose the subject • Understand your audience and the occasion. • Analyze the audience • Ask yourself questions regarding the audience and the purpose of them listening to you. • Organize the speech • Intro, body, conclusion • Chronologically, logically, in order of importance, or string of beads

Preparing a Speech Cont. • Deliver the speech • impromptu., memory, manuscript, extemporaneous • Vary the voice • Pausing, pitch, changing pace, modify volume, & change intonation. • Body Language • We give meaning to words with our body movements. • Psychology • The speaker’s attitude will reflect on the audience. • Other features • Take into account the speaking time, seating, clear, relevant visual aids, and allow question time.

  11. Persuasive Speech Assignment • Create an item/invention. Must be innovative! Never been seen before. • Write a persuasive speech attempting to sell the new item to the class. • Must provide visual aids (2D or 3D models of the object) • Must present to class. • 50 points presentation • 25 points visual aid • 25 points written speech
