  10. B: Box in the question. • The Bridge family takes 9 tents when they go camping. The Bartlett family takes 7 tents, and the McHugh family takes 5 tents. How many tents do they take in all?

  11. S: Solve & label the word problem. • The Bridge family takes 9 tents when they go camping. The Bartlett family takes 7 tents, and the McHugh family takes 5 tents. How many tents do they take in all? 9 + 7 + 5 = 21 tents number model answer

  12. Great work! Look at #1 on your paper. You are going to solve this one on your own now!

  13. I will pull up the screen and do this problem with you after everyone has tried it! Alyssa jumped 11 times. Nora jumped 15 times. How many times did they jump altogether?

  14. Here is our answer! Number model: 11 + 15 = 26 Answer: 26 times

  15. Way to go! Now try #2!

  16. We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Riley kicked a soccer ball 102 times. Xariyan kicked a soccer ball 94 times. How many more times did Riley kick the soccer ball than Xariyan?

  17. Here is our answer! Number model: 102 - 94 = 8 Answer: 8 more times

  23. Here is our answer! Number model: 49 + 10 = 59 Answer: 59 books

  24. Amazing job!Now are you ready for a REAL challenge?

  25. Let’s review our CBS rules: C: Circle the important numbers. B: Box in the question. S: Solve & label the word problem!

  26. This time there will be MORE than one step in the word problem! You will have to take your time and think really hard to solve these tricky math word problems!

  27. This time, when we don’t know part of the word problem we will represent what we don’t know with a letter! This is called ALGEBRA! (You are SO grown up to be doing algebra already. Your teachers didn’t learn algebra until they were in middle school!)

  28. Here is an example: 42 + 13 – 3 = x or 62 + 37 – 41 = a

  29. Let’s try an example together! Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with? (These problems have more than one step… we might have to add AND subtract in some of them! Yikes!)

  30. C: Circle the important numbers. Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?

  31. B: Box in the question. Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?

  32. S: Solve & label the word problem. Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with? Remember that we need to use a letter to represent the information that we don’t know yet! 56 + 76 – 17 = b Number model:

  33. S: Solve & label the word problem. Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with? Now we can solve for the letter b! 56 + 76 – 17 = b Number model: 56 + 76 – 17 = 115 balloons Answer:

  34. Fabulous! How about we do one more as a class?

  37. B: Box in the question. Evan has a large collection of books. He gave his best friend 14 books and his brother 7 books. Now Evan has 60 books. How many books did he start with?

  38. S: Solve & label the word problem. Evan has a large collection of books. He gave his best friend 14 books and his brother 7 books. Now Evan has 60 books. How many books did he start with? Remember that we need to use a letter to represent the information that we don’t know yet! 60 + 7 + 14 = n Number model:
