1. Write a Letter to the Author Using your reading book as a resource
2. Your Objective After you read your self-selected book, you are going to write a letter to the author of your book.
You are going to use the friendly letter format (see example).
We will actually send the letter and see if we get a response back during the school year.
You will write the letter after researching the author and finding out some information about him/her.
3. Follow these Steps: Step #1:
Research the author and take notes

Use your notes to compose your letter
Write a rough draft of the letter in your Readers Notebook
4. Follow these Steps: Step #2
Your rough draft should have THREE paragraphs
Paragraph #1: Tell about yourself and your connections to the author or the book
Paragraph #2:Think of several questions for the author about the books he/she writes
Paragraph #3: Think of several questions about the process of writing
5. Include the Following: Mention the book(s) you have read by this author
Give at least THREE observations about the book (your likes/dislikes, opinions about the characters, setting, plot, resolution, sequels, personal connections, etc.)
Ask at least TWO questions about the author or about the process of writing a book
6. Also include the following: Tell the author something about yourself as a reader or a writer (DO NOT give any personal information)
Thank the author and state that you would enjoy hearing from him/her if possible
Sign your first name, but make up a pseudonym for your last name!
7. The Final Step Peer conference with your partner and give feedback regarding content, spelling, and grammar. Edit and revise your letter. Make it the best you can
Use the laptops to type your final draft and save it to your mid number. Use the authors name as the file name.
Hand in the final copy.
We will mail the letters together.

8. **We will include a self-addressed, stamped envelope in our letter (bring one in to class)! Dont Forget
9. 1. You are more likely to get a response if you ask interesting questions. Do not ask yes or no questions.2. You stand a better chance of getting a response if you write to a less well-known author.3. Be politepeople are turned off by rudeness.4. If you receive a response, write a thank you note back to the author. It is a courteous thing to do5. Most authors can be contacted via their publishers if you cannot find an address. Remember
