Environmental Remediation Sciences Division (ERSD) (~$80M) Fundamental research for DOE environmental problems Supports a research program and a national scientific user facility: Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) $36M Environmental Remediation Sciences Program $44M The William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a U.S. Department of Energy national scientific user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington provides integrated experimental and computational resources for discovery and technological innovation in the environmental molecular sciences to support the needs of DOE and the nation. • Processes that control contaminant mobility • Focus on DOE-relevant metals and radionuclides

EMSL Accomplishments • EMSL Researcher, Yanwen Zhang, selected for Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in June 2006 for research on ion-beam physics and ion-solid interactions • EMSL scientists use three of EMSL’s portable mass spectrometers to participate in study of hydrocarbon/aerosol interactions during the September 2006 Atmospheric Sciences Program field campaign in Houston, Texas • Long-time EMSL user from Washington Statue University, Lai-Sheng Wang, received the Humboldt Research Award for leading-edge research in nanocluster research (nanoscale cages of gold atoms) • Canned nuclear waste cooks its container” (Ian Farnan et al., Cambridge University, Nature News 1/10/07) • EMSL’s mass spectrometry capabilities used for three large-scale proteomics studies by different teams of users on a range of life forms - vaccina virus, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and mouse brain cells • Fomer EMSL Director, Jean Futrell, awarded 2007 ACS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mass Spectrometry • EMSL Science Facility Lead, Roy Gephart, selected as part of an 8-member U.S. team to participate in a joint U.S. National Academy of Sciences/Russian Academy of Sciences workshop focused on identifying cleanup issues at six Russian sites • October 1, 2007 - celebrating 10th anniversary of operations
