  2. Reproductive Mechanisms in Australian Biota • There are 2 mechanisms of reproduction available to Australian Flora and Fauna. • Sexual reproduction • Asexual reproduction

  3. Sexual Reproduction • For Australian populations to survive using sexual reproduction, they must have certain “reproductive mechanisms” that increase the chance of fertilisation, increase the chance of survival of their embryos (unborn), and increase the chance of survival of their young after birth

  4. Sexual Reproduction • To ensure fertilisation, sexually mature individuals need to be brought together • This process is called mating • Many factors influence mating behaviour: temperature, food, phases of moon, etc • Some adaptations of Australian species to ensure fertilisation include:

  5. Bower Bird • Bower Bird: They lack showy plumage, so the male decorates its nest with bright blue objects to attract the female. They have elaborate courtship rituals

  6. Brolgas • Australian Brolgas: Performs an elaborate dance before mating

  7. Trout • Common Trout: They come together during the full moon of their mating season and release their gametes into the water

  8. Whales, Seals and Dolphins • Whales, Seals and Dolphins: All have internal fertilisation, where the male gametes are deposited directly into the female. They often have spectacular courtship rituals.
