  3. Asthma prevalence • 5.4 million people receive treatment for asthma in the UK (1 in 12 adults – 1 in 11 children) • 368,000 of these live in Scotland • 1 in 5 households are affected • 2 children in every classroom

  4. Hospital Admissions • Over 73,000 in 2007-08 • One person every 7 minutes • One child every 19 minutes • Estimated cost to NHS £61 million

  5. Asthma deaths • Every 7 hours someone dies due to an asthma attack • 3 people per day • 1,200 deaths in 2007 (21 children) • 112 people died in Scotland from asthma in 2007

  6. Impact on children • High prevalence in UK • Third of all long term illnesses • 12% experience severe attacks • High admission rates • Parental smoking • Two thirds may lose symptoms as they get older

  14. What does Asthma UK do? Asthma UK works together with people with asthma, health professionals and researchers to develop and share expertise to help people with asthma and reduce the effect of it on their lives. We are working towards our vision of ‘control over asthma today, freedom from asthma tomorrow.’

Participation • ‘I get a buzz from being involved and making people more aware of asthma and the impact it has on people’s lives.’ • ‘It’s been great helping people over the years, to give them support and help them feel that they’re not alone. The Adviceline is great but it’s also good to give people more local support.’ • ‘I’ve achieved things that I never would have done before like talking in Parliament. I also feel like I’ve grown as a person and increased my self-esteem and confidence.’ • ‘I’ve managed to raise nearly £3,000 for Asthma UK and feel good to be able to give something back.’

  32. Community Health Partnerships 2008/2009 Visits to CHPs • There are 40 CHPs in Scotland. • We have established contact with 22 of these and visited 14. • From these contacts we received 11 applications for funding of asthma projects.

Community Health Partnerships • Angus CHP implemented the Asthma UK emergency care pack • Southwest Glasgow identified children and families not attending for review targeting them to offer asthma education • North Glasgow conducted an audit within community pharmacy to identify over-use of reliever inhalers • Glenrothes and North East Fife CHP targeted schools offering an asthma course in primary and secondary schools

School asthma policies All schools should: • Update and review the school’s asthma policy every year • Have a centralised school asthma register that identifies all pupils at school with asthma • their individual common signs of an asthma attack • triggers and current medicines • It should also have emergency contact details • Ensure all school staff know what to do in an asthma attack – regular training • Ensure all children and young people have immediate access to their medicines at all times
