  1. Instead of taking a big unit test on “Flowers for Algernon,” you are asked to construct 2 final projects. The first project is one general assignment for everyone to complete. The second project is one of your own choices. There are different due dates and different grading rubrics for each project! Do not put this off until the last minute!

For the first assignment: Design a book cover or movie poster for “Flowers for Algernon.” • Can be made by hand or created digitally. • Posters should be in color (do not print in black & white). • The title must be somewhere on the poster. • Posters should be at least 8.5” x 11” big. • Name & class period go on the back of your design.

  3. Posters are based purely on creativity and connectivity to the story.(Note: You are not being graded on your artistic ability.) This poster is worth 20 points. This poster is due: 12/10

Final Project Overview • You are asked to complete a final project to show your total understanding of “Flowers for Algernon.” • You are given 4 different options. • Everyone must present their final projects. (We will sign-up!) • You will be given class time to complete these projects, but you may need to go the “extra step” and work at home too!

  7. “Flowers for Algernon” ends quite abruptly. Through journal entries continue Charlie’s journey. Intrapersonal / Linguistic Option (1)

Intrapersonal / Linguistic Option (1) Directions: • You must write five entries & each entry must be at least eight sentences long. • Remember to use the same style and format as the author. • Journals may be typed or handwritten. • (Watch for spellcheck if intentionally spelling words incorrectly like Charlie speaks.) • Final Journal should be neatly put together, with a cover page including cover artwork (computer or hand-drawn). • Cover page should include title, author’s name, your name, and a small piece of artwork.

  11. “Flowers for Algernon” has many symbols and a strong central theme. Through a series of images and objects capture the essence of the story. Visual / Spatial Option (2)

Visual / Spatial Option (2) Directions: • Collect 20 pictures or objects that relate to the story. • Pictures may be printed from the internet or hand-drawn. • Attach pictures and objects to a hanging mobile. • No duplicates are to be used. (Ex. Picture of mouse and toy mouse attached.) • Write a sentence explaining each of the connections to the story.

  15. “Flowers for Algernon” was made into a TV movie in 2000.Through cinematic creativity produce a movie trailer for a new version of the story. Interpersonal / Kinesthetic Option (3)

  16. Interpersonal / Kinesthetic Option (3) Directions: • Form a group of 3-4 students. • Determine important moments from the story. (Don’t give away anything too important!) • Create a movie trailer! • Include credits/titles/text for the movie’s name, a date to debut, and credits including the students involved in creating the trailer/movie. • Movie trailer must be at least one minute and thirty seconds long.

  19. Find the musical inspirations behind “Flowers for Algernon.” Develop a soundtrack based from the story. Musical Option (4)

Musical Option (4) Directions: • Collect 20 songs that you connect to “Flowers for Algernon.” • Write a sentence or two explaining the relationship between song and story. • Print off lyrics for each individual song. • Develop an album cover for the soundtrack. • Create a track list of all of the songs on the back of the cover.

(It will disappear after that!)
