  1. Essential Skills Communication (the new and improved Key Skills)

The tasks: • C3.1.3 (a) Take part in a formal discussion with two or more other people about a complex subject (twice) • C3.1b- make a formal presentation of at least 8 (10 for WBQ) minutes using an image or other support material • C3.2- Read and synthesise information from at least two documents about the same subject (2x > 1,000 words) • C3.3 Write two different types of document, each giving different information about complex subjects (1>1,000 words)

Success criteria Make clear and relevant contributions Suit the purpose and audience Respond sensitively to others Develop points and ideas Encourage others to contribute Useful evidence Minutes of group/ team meetings Video? Sound recording? Notes made in preparation for the meeting Photo Copies of handouts Witness statement C3.1a- take part in a group conversation

Success criteria Speak clearly Adapt presentation to audience and purpose Structure what you say logically Use an image or other support material Present, rather than read the work ADDRESSES THE AUDIENCE Useful evidence Video? Sound recording? Notes / prompt cards Photo Copies of handouts Notes from the assessor/ witness statement C3.1b- make a formal presentation of at least 8 (10) minutes using an image or other support material.

Success criteria Select and read relevant documents Identify and compare the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning Present your own interpretation, bringing together information from different documents Useful evidence copies of the documents read, showing what was used through use of highlighter, scribbles in the margin The notes made from the documents to prepare for a further task A bibliography C3.2- Read and synthesise information from at least two documents about the same subject (≥ 1,000words)

Success Criteria One document is ≥ 1,000words Use an appropriate style and format for the purpose Organise coherently Accurate spelling/ grammar/ punctuation The meaning is clear Subject matter is complex/ sensitive/ abstract Useful Evidence Copies of the documents (one with an image) A description of the background to the documents C3.3 Write two different types of document, each giving different information about complex subjects.

  7. Links • Remember- • Reading can be prep for writing or oral tasks • One written piece can be the investigation • Presentation can be about the investigation Ask your teachers about opportunities you will have during the year.

  8. Remember! • Essential Skills Communications = 20 UCAS points when you apply OR part of WBQ for 120 points • It is PROOF that you are competent in these skills • It will be hard evidence to show to an employer
