  1. What Is Medical Coding? Medical coding involves the process of ensuring that procedure and diagnoses codes that are taken from medical record documentation are correctly applied during the medical billing process itself. Following this, a claim can then be created by medical billers, which can then be paid by insurance carriers. Whenever a patient visits their healthcare provider, medical coding is something that takes place. More specifically, the provider will review a patient’s medical history and complaint. They will then come up with an expert opinion regarding what they believe may be wrong, as well as how you should be treated. Your visit will then be documented. Medical codes are designed to translate documentation into the following that tells insurance companies the following: *A patient’s diagnosis *All medical necessities for services, supplies, and treatments *All services, supplies, and treatments that were supplied to the patient *Any and all unusual medical conditions and circumstances that had an affect on the services and treatments provided to the patient A medical coder must mostly review all clinical statements and assign basic codes using classification systems such as HCPCS Level II, CPT, and ICD-10-CDM. Additionally, a medical coder takes the time to thoroughly check a patient’s medical record in order to verify all work performed on them in order to help ensure that the coding and billing processes were performed as smoothly as possible. In order to become a medical coder, one must first take part in training through a specific training program or take college courses. Following this, it is rather easy to find a medical coding job, especially if you have professional credentials in the field itself.
