  2. The Statistics • Estimated 120,000 people living with AIDS • Estimated 1.7 percent of the country has the disease • 88% are between the ages of 15-49

  3. The Causes • Prostitution/sex tourism • Extreme poverty • Lack of awareness

  4. Prostitution • Government does not outlaw prostitution making it one of the sex tourism capitols of the world. • Prevalence around 12% among sex workers • Santo Domingo accounts for highest number of sex workers • AIDS prevalence 10 times higher in the capitol, then the national average

  5. Male sex workers are marked as the highest risk as there are few prevention tactics aimed at them • Prostitution driven by lack of economy in rural regions, the interior as there is a 5% AIDS prevalence rate in low income adults

  6. Lack of Awareness • Only 34% of males have comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS • 44% of females used protection during last higher risk sex • Much of this can be blamed on lack of education and poverty throughout much of the country • 19% of cases are between homosexual partners this is due to the lack of governmental programs created to combat the disease in the Gay community
