  1. Subject-Verb Agreement What do I do to check for subject/verb agreement?

  2. Mentor Sentence Read and copy the MENTOR SENTENCE below. Write at least three things you notice about it. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  -Margaret Mead

  3. Agreement Imagine being stuck on a desert island… With someone you can’t stand

  4. Agreement • Subjectsand verbs must get along when they share a sentence. • Subjectsand verbs must agree with one another in number.  • In the present tense, a singularsubjecttakes a singularverb, and a pluralsubjecttakes a pluralverb.  Singular Subject Plural Subject Add –s or –es to the verb Keep the base form of verb

  5. Twosingularsubjectsjoined by and make a pluralsubject. Mr. Croc and Mr. Ikewalk to class. Theywalk to class.

  6. When each or every precedes two (or more) singular nouns are joined by and, you have a singularsubject Eachdollar and everymoneybag waits to be grabbed.

  7. Subjects with singular nouns joined by either/or orneither/nor take a singular verb. • Either the dog or thecatgoes to the vet today. • Neither theclown nor thealien (want/wants) to get wet.

  8. Subjects with a singular noun and a plural noun joined by orornor take the verb that agrees with the closer noun. Abraham Lincoln or Jackie Robinson walk the dog. Neither the birds nor the dog touches the tofu sandwich.

  9. These indefinite pronouns are always singular [even when they seem plural]. • Each, either, neither • Anyone, anybody, anything • Everyone, everybody, everything • No one, nobody, nothing • Someone, somebody, something Nobody likes homework over winter break. Everyone is excited about the party.

  10. Beware interrupting phrases. • When the subject and the verb are separated by other words or phrases, make sure the verb agrees with the subject, not with a noun within the phrase. The womanwith all of the butterflieslooks happy.

  11. Don't let those phrases fool you. • Thefancypenguin, accompanied by his bird, is going to the city.

  12. Right Here, Right Now Fix the subject-verb agreement errors below. Sasha and Mr. Cruz lands on a deserted island after a bad storm. Neither are excited to be stuck on the island with the other. The island, with all of its strange sounds, intimidate them. The flora and the fauna scares Sasha, and neither the strange fruit nor the berries is ripe to eat say Mr. Cruz. Somebody have to save these two before long!

  13. Try it out Can I have a few volunteers who will use this strategy today? Will you plan to bring what you do to the share today?
