  2. Act I, Scene 2 1. What chore does Troy want Cory to help with?

  3. Act I, Scene 2 Troy wants Cory to help him build a fence. He fears that Cory is scared of working hard.

  4. Act I, Scene 2 2. What is wrong with Gabriel?

  5. Act I, Scene 2 Gabriel, Troy’s younger brother, was shot in the head in World War II. Due to his brain injury he has a metal plate in his head. He believes he is the Archangel Gabriel and that he talks to St. Peter (the keeper of the gates of heaven).

  6. Act I, Scene 2 3. Where has Gabe gone to live?

  7. Act I, Scene 2 Gabe explains to Troy that he moved over to Miss Pearl's because he didn't want to be in the way.

  8. Act I, Scene 2 4. What is the connection between Troy’s house and Gabe’s injury?

  9. Act I, Scene 2 Troy displays some guilt for managing the money Gabriel receives from the government and using it to pay for his home. He says “That’s the only way I got a roof over my head…cause of that metal plate” (28).

  10. Act 1, Scene 3 1. Why won’t Troy buy a TV?

  11. Act 1, Scene 3 A new television costs $200. Troy is worried that his roof will need to be tarred and that he will need to save up money for it to be repaired. He also doesn’t want to finance the TV since he doesn’t like to owe people.

  12. Act 1, Scene 3 2. What does Troy say about blacks on baseball teams?

  13. Act 1, Scene 3 Troy says that “The colored guy got to be twice as good [as a white] before he get on the team” (34). This is also why he doesn’t want Cory to get involved in sports.

  14. Act 1, Scene 3 3. What is Troy’s attitude towards Cory playing football?

  15. Act 1, Scene 3 Troy fears that Cory will have limited success in football because of his race. He would rather see his son do his chores, work at the A&P and learn a trade.

  16. Act 1, Scene 3 4. What kind of attitude does Troy have about his authority in the family?

  17. Act 1, Scene 3 Troy calls himself the boss of the family. He says, “I am the boss around here. I do the only saying what counts” (36).

  18. Act 1, Scene 3 5. What is Troy’s response when Cory asks why Troy never liked him?

  19. Act 1, Scene 3 Troy says, “Who the hell say I got to like you?” Troy believes since he provides food and shelter for Cory that he has fulfilled his responsibilities as a father.

  20. Act 1, Scene 3 6. According to Rose, why was Troy not able to play professional baseball?

  21. Act 1, Scene 3 Rose says that Troy was too old to play in the Major Leagues. (Troy thinks it has to do with his skin color.)

  22. Act 1, Scene 3 7. What does Troy mean when he says “That’s all I got to give, Rose”?

  23. Act 1, Scene 3 He tells Rose that he is trying to give everything he has to his family and he can't change or give anything else but his hard work and responsibility. Troy feels that his financial support is more than enough.

  24. Act 1, Scene 3 8. Describe the major conflicts between Troy and Cory.

  25. Act 1, Scene 3 Troy and Cory's father-son relationship succumbs to its first major blow while working together on Rose's fence. Cory has taken care of insuring his job at the A&P for after football season and gets good grades in school, but Troy does not acknowledge these responsible acts. Instead, Troy only sees the ways Cory does not live up to Troy's vision of how Cory should live his life. Troy's hypocrisy, especially concerning playing sports, becomes evident to Cory over the course of his conversation with Troy as they build the fence.
