  1. People I am thankful to have in my life

  2. Make a list….. • First, make a list of as many people as you can think of who you are thankful to have in your life.

  3. Next choose one… • Okay, I know this is difficult, but now you need to chose one person from your list to focus on.

  4. Next brainstorm character traits… • Next, brainstorm a list of character traits to describe this person.

  5. Look over your list… Mom • thoughtful • kind • honest • patient • responsible • understanding • sensitive • helpful • absent-minded

  6. Choose three…… • Choose the three character traits which bestdescribe why you are thankful to have this person in your life.

  7. Assignment One: Trait One • Choose one of your three character traits. (for example kind, honest, or patient). Choose two to three examples of how the person you have chosen has shown this trait towards you, and therefore, made a positive impact on your life.

  8. Example: Mom - Patient • When mom helps me with my math homework, she is really patient when I have trouble understanding. • When I have soccer practice mom always waits patiently for me until practice is over.

  9. Assignment Two: Trait OneWrite a paragraph. Write a paragraph to the person you have chosen. Be sure to: • 1. In your introductory sentence, make it personal by using the person’s name, and naming the character trait. • 2. Give two or three examples of how this trait is important to you. • 4. Provide a closing statement to “wrap it up.”

One example of your patience is when you help me with my math homework, you are really patient when I have trouble understanding.I also appreciate that when I have soccer practice, you always wait patiently for me until practice is over. I am so lucky to have a really patient mom!

  15. Assignment 7: Set up your letter. • Indent your date November --, 2013 • Skip a line • Write your greeting starting at the margin: • Dear Mom, (follow with a comma) • Skip a line.

  17. Assignment 7: Set up your letter. • Compose a thoughtful introduction which names the 3 traits you wrote about. • Mom, I am so thankful to have you in my life. Your patience, kindness, and understanding have helped me to become a better person. I feel blessed to have you in my life.

  18. Assignment 8: Revise 3 paragraphs • Look over your three character trait paragraphs, revise and edit as needed. Swap with a friend and have an editing conference. • Add the revised versions to your letter.

  19. Write your conclusion • Write a short concluding paragraph which “wraps up” your letter and restates the three traits. • Mom, I do not tell you often enough how important you are to me. The many times you have shown me patience, kindness, and understanding have made a huge impact on my life and made me a better person.

  20. Add your closing and signature • Your closing lets the reader know that you are finished with your letter. (Sincerely, Fondly, Your friend, Love etc.) • There is a comma after the end of the closing and only the first word in the closing is capitalized. • The closing is usually indented in line with the date. • The signature is usually written in cursive.   21. P.S. • If you want to add anything additional to the letter you write a P.S. (post script) and the message after that. • P.S. Mom, you’re the best.

  22. Final Check • Once your letter is complete, go back and give it a final check. This is the time to see if you have left anything out or want to change anything. Be sure to check for errors in capitalization, spelling, and grammar. • Your final copy will be typed during computer time.
