  1. Warm Up April 1st, 2014 Name 3 types of fossils. Name the three most recent eras. If you had, say a pop quiz in 5 minutes, what would it most likely be on? Please write a difficult but answerable question for said hypothetical quiz.

  2. Types of Fossils • Mold • Cast • Petrified • Preserved • Carbonized • Trace

  3. Mold* • Forms when sediments bury an organism and the sediments change into rock; the organism decays leaving a cavity in the shape of the organism.

  4. Cast* • Forms when a mold is filled with sand or mud that hardens into the shape of the organism

  5. Petrified* • Forms when minerals soak into the buried remains, replacing the remains, and changing them into rock.

  6. Preserved* • Forms when entire organisms or parts of organisms are prevented from decaying by being trapped in rock, ice, tar, or amber.

  7. Carbonized* • Forms when organisms or parts, like leaves, fish, etc., are pressed between layers of soft mud that hardens, leaving the carbon imprint in the rock.

  8. Trace* • Forms when the mud or sand hardens to stone where a footprint, trail, or burrow of an organism was left behind.

  9. Fossil Lab • Paleozoic – Oldest looking fossils, pre-dinosaur • Mesozoic – Time of the dinosaurs, lots of plants (Ferns) • Cenozoic – Modern day, post dinosaurs, still see these types of organisms today • Size and shape of organism may help determine too!
