  24. Lights, a festival theme

  25. At the time of Jesus…There were four (4) golden menorahs- lampstands each about 75 feet tall, with four (4) bowls each. Against them rested four (4) ladders. Four (4) youth of priestly descent each with a pitcher of oil fill the bowls. The old worn breeches of the priests served as wicks to the lamps. There was not a court in Jerusalem that was not filled with light.

  26. The dark sky at that time was not the grey of today’s light pollution, it was really dark, no streetlights…only the brilliant glow of the full moon of Sukkoth-the Feast of Booths. And the city of Jerusalem was bathed in an almost shekinah-like glory from the four menorahs.

  27. Into this light at the Feast of Booths in (John 8:12,) “ Jesus said.., I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The context of this revelation of His glory was without doubt the special illumination of the Temple during the Feast of Booths.

  28. Ancient writings of this period say..“The Hasidim (holy ones) and ‘the men of Deed’ danced before the people with flaming torches in their hands reciting words of song and praise. Levities worshiped with harps, liars, cymbals, trumpets and instruments without number.”

  29. “At first only the great scholars, members of the Sanhedrin, elders and men distinguished for their piety — only these danced in the Temple itself.” Ancient writings say that “he who has not seen the rejoicing of Succoth has never seen rejoicing in his life time.”
