  1. Chemistry How to Prove Graham’s Law By: Yohana Ansari-Thomas

  2. Table of Contents • Introduction • Materials • Procedure Part One • Procedure Part Two • Procedure Part Three • Conclusion

  3. Introduction • Graham’s Law: The rate at which a gas diffuses is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass of its particles.

  4. Materials • 2-3 cm diameter glass tube • Meter stick • 2 Q-tip halves • 12 M concentrated hydrochloric acid • 15 M concentrated ammonium hydroxide

  5. Procedure • Put on safety eyewear for whole experiment • Place glass tube squarely on table • Place bottle of concentrated HCL near end of glass tube. Place bottle of concentrated ammonium hydroxide near other end.

  6. Procedure • Remove stopper from bottle and insert Q-Tip into liquid. • Place on opposite ends of glass tube. • Record time and place stopper back on bottle.

  7. Procedure • Mark inner most tip on Q-Tip on glass tube. • Mark where two gases have met. • Remove Q-Tips. • Clean up area

  8. Done! • You’ve proven Graham’s Law! Congratulations! • For more help on Graham’s Law, click here
