  4. WHAT IS FILM? • COMMUNICATES DIRECTLY – NOT ABSTRACT • MAKES A FEW SECONDS SEEM LIKE HOURS AND VISE VERSA • CAN CREATE A SENSE OF REALITY

  5. WHAT IS FILM ANALYSIS? • DIFFICULT BECAUSE FILM IS A CONTINUOUS MOTION OF ART • ONGOING PROCESS • BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BASIC TECHNIQUES OF FILM MAKING

  6. WHAT IS FILM ANALYSIS? • TAKES SEVERAL VIEWINGS FOR A THOROUGH ANALYSIS: • FIRST TIME – PLOT, EMOTIONAL EFFECTS, THEME • SECOND TIME – How’s and why’s of the film • Gradually these two phases will come together

  7. Value of Film Analysis • Some people think it kills the magical experience of watching a film.

Analysis helps us articulate messages and meanings with a critical eye. – Higher level of understanding. • i.Byanalyzing a film we can engage our Minds creatively as well as intellectually. • ii.Opensup new channels of awareness and depths in our minds. • iii. The more understanding we have the more enjoyment we will get out of watching the movie. • d.

  13. Be careful not to over respond to individual elements. See the film as a whole. • i.e. “I hate war films.” • “I won’t watch anything with nudity”

  14. Film-Viewing Environment • Theater? • Home? • Classroom • Couch? • Alone? • With others? (Does the experience change depending on the environment? • Small screen”

  15. Huge screen? • Sound? (theatre vs. home) • What is the difference? • Wide Screen? • Changes the scenes. Panning allows certain important images to enter the smaller TV screen and skews the picture.

  16. Preparing to see a film • Should you know something about the film before you see it? • Free from others’ opinions?

  17. Read reviews • Find out ratings, running time, summary of plot • Significant elements • Relate to other films
