Impact of Prolonged Corticosteroid Use on Asthma Patients' Growth at USTH Pediatric OPD

This study explores the effects of prolonged corticosteroid use on growth in pediatric asthma patients seen at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital Pediatric Out-Patient Department. The research, conducted with 155 qualified subjects aged 1 to 14, reveals that corticosteroid use does not influence their growth. Recommendations include knemometry for chronic ICS users and assessing severity of asthma.

  3. Objectives: • To determine if prolonged corticosteroid use inhibits/ promotes growth of patients with asthma in USTH Pediatric OPD.

  4. Study Design • Descriptive • Cross-sectional • Correlational

  5. Setting • University of Santo Tomas Hospital • Out Patient Department • Department of Pediatrics • Allergology patients

  6. Subjects • Qualified Pediatric Patients • January 1, 2010- July 31, 2010 • Inclusion criteria • Male or female • Aged 1 to 14 years old • Clinically diagnosed as having mild or moderate persistent controlled Asthma.

  7. Subjects • Exclusion criteria • chronic diseases • fracture or immobilization • Use of oral steroids • growth disorder, or history of glaucoma or cataract • height measurements outside 5-95% percentile of normal values for their age.

  8. Outcome Measurements • Z score ( height for age) • Height • Duration of Asthma • Severity of Asthma
