Ethical Communication & Citizenship

Japan's Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, approved a treaty mandating the return of abducted children to their habitual residence when snatched during international marriage breakdowns. This decision addresses the plight of numerous non-Japanese parents, mainly fathers from the US, left without legal recourse when their children are taken back to Japan. Unlike many Western nations, Japan does not support joint custody or equitable divorce proceedings, often favoring maternal custody in divorce cases. This treaty signifies a potentially progressive shift in Japan's approach to international child custody issues.
