WHAT IS WASTE INCINERATION? Theobjective of wasteincineration, in commonwithmostwastetreatments, is totreatwasteso as toreduceitsvolumeandhazard, whilstcapturing (andthusconcentrating) ordestroyingpotentiallyharmfulsubstances. Incinerationprocesses can alsoprovide a meanstoenablerecoveryof theenergy, mineral and/orchemicalcontentfromwaste. http://eippcb.jrc.ec.europa.eu/reference/BREF/wi_bref_0806.pdf http://eippcb.jrc.ec.europa.eu/reference/BREF/wi_bref_0806.pdf
WHY IS IT NECESSARY? • Whilethegrowthin productionand marketing makesexcessiveuse of naturalresourcesinevitable, wastesproducedduetoincreasing trend of consumptionhavereachedtothreateninglevelsduetotheirquantityandhazardouscontents. • Aimingtopreventrapidconsumption of naturalresourcesandtosettletheproblem of wastesresultingfromproduction, marketing andconsumptionactivitiesthroughconvertingthemtoeconomicasset, thewastemanagementstrategies form thebasisof “sustainabledevelopment” approachthat has beengraduallyadoptedallovertheworld as a prioritizedpolicyobjective. http://www.sayistay.gov.tr/english_tca/Performance/TCA_Waste_Management_Report.pdf

WASTE INCINERATION PLANTS IN THE WORLD Therole of wasteincinerationdiffers in thecountries of theworld. While in theindustrialisedcountries in Europeas wellas in Japan, the USA andCanadatheproportion of wasteburned in wasteincinerationplants can be veryhigh (upto 100 percent), in mostdevelopingcountrieslandfilling is themorecommonwastemanagementpractice. http://www.ipcc-nggip.iges.or.jp/public/gp/bgp/5_3_Waste_Incineration.

WASTE INCINERATION DIRECTIVE IN EUROPA DIRECTIVE 2000/76/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 4 December 2000 on the incineration of waste (OJ L 332, 28.12.2000, p. 91 • The WI Directive makes a distinction between: a) incineration plants (which are dedicated to the thermal treatment of waste and may or may not recover heat generated by combustion) and b) co-incineration plants (such as cement or lime kilns, steel plants or power plants whose main purpose is energy generation or the production of material products and in which waste is used as a fuel or is thermally treated for the purpose of disposal).
