  2. Europe & The Colonists. Europe’s view of the Colonies Colonies’ view of Europe. Where they could go to escape persecution for religious or political views Restrictions made by Europe made it difficult to sell goods, and also made life hard for the colonists. People born in the colonies had more loyalty to the colony, not to Europe. • They thought the colonies we’re their property & that it only existed to serve their nation. • The land was where goods would be sold • The colonists we’re expected to be loyal to the British and not go against them.

  3. Boston Massacre • Five American colonists were shot by British troops, which deepened the colonist’s distrust in the British • This happened on March 5, 1770 • The colonists taunted the British by throwing snowballs, rocks, and sticks. • Said to be caused by the outrage of many taxed items

  4. Intolerable Acts • Impartial Administration of Justice act: the royal governor of a colony could move trails to other colonies or even to England if they thought judges wouldn’t judge fairly. • Massachusetts Bay Regulating act: Made law officers subject to appointment by royal government and banned all town meetings that weren’t approved by the royal government. • Boston port act: closed the port of Boston until the price of tea dumped in the bay was recovered and named Marble Head the official port of the Massachusetts colony. • Quartering act: allowed royal troops to stay in houses of colonists if barracks weren’t available. • Quebec act: granted access to religious freedom to Catholics living in Quebec.

  5. The Stamp Act. • The Stamp act taxed colonists on paper products. • Stamp act was instituted November 1765. • Many colonists were unhappy being taxed on paper. • Reactions were loud and sometimes violent • This was the most unpopular tax act passed by Parliament

  6. Tea Act • Allowed British East India Company to sell tea to the colonists without tax • Intended to aid East India Company, which were close to collapsing from economic weakness in European markets. • Tea Act passed December 16, 1773 • Taxed only if the colonists bought a tea other than East India Company’s • Tea was boycotted by the colonists.

  7. Boston tea party • disguised as Native Americans a group called the Sons of Liberty dumped 342 crates of tea into the sea. • Since the Sons of Liberty were disguised as Native Americans, they claimed they never dumped the tea. • Sons of Liberty had a group of colonists led by Samuel Adams & John Hancock. • The group had secret meetings on how to send their message to Great Britain, that America wanted a say in governing • The dumping of the tea happened December 16, 1773.
