Enhancing Mobile Patient Discovery: Integrating Data Repositories with MHD and XD* Standards

This proposal addresses the challenges of mobile patient discovery by exploring the integration of data repositories like MPI and MHD within the XD* infrastructure. It discusses the difficulties of obtaining demographic information and patient identities through existing HL7 standards (PIX/PDQ) in mobile environments. Our focus is on developing lightweight, RESTful services that can efficiently retrieve patient information while complementing existing mHealth projects. By leveraging current technology, we aim to create a seamless experience for mobile healthcare applications.

  3. MHD XD* / Other Infrastructure • Designed for sharing of documents • JSON representation of XD* meta-data • RESTful access to XD* infrastructure • Patient identity not scoped but guidance exists • Can be performed by the recipient/responder • Bracelet number = enterprise identity • Difficult to get demographics information Doc Recipient / Responder MHD MHD Consumer Source

  4. PIX / PDQ • Established patient identity X-Ref and Demographics query • Not suited for mobile • PIX/PDQ (HL7v2) • Inconsistent support for socket programming on mobile • Lightweight browser apps (JavaScript) = nearly impossible without gateway • PIX/PDQ (HL7v3) • Inconsistent support for SOAP + WS* on mobile • Same issue for lightweight browser apps

  5. Mobile Patient Discovery • Seeks to profile mechanisms for mobile / lightweight clients to: • Resolve patient identities from a known identifier (similar to PIX) • Retrieve demographics information from structured query (similar to PDQ) • Leveraging existing projects in mHealth community • Complementary to MHD • Similar: PIX/PDQ complements XDS • Similar: XCPD complements XCA
