  1. NUA Information Meeting Make sure you have an information packet. This is due 2 weeks prior to the class start. You can email Mary.Torbett@frontrange.edu for a packet or pick one up at the BCC.

  3. Apply to FRCC • Apply to FRCC if you are not a current or previous FRCC Student • Assessment Testing/Accuplacer? Ask advisor! May have a hold on your account if new to FRCC! • Health Advisor • Career Advising • Class Load • Most students find it difficult to take the NUA course in addition to other classes. Please be aware of the intensity of the course and adjust your class schedule/course load as needed.

  4. NUA to CNA • Class prepares you for SBON CNA Test and work as a CNA • Course completion does not = CNA license, must take State CNA test

  5. How the class works • You will be required to read from the text and bring that knowledge in as a base to build upon with lecture/hands-on/group presentations, and interactive learning formats. • You will learn hands-on skills and be tested on the successful return demonstration of those skills in the lab setting. • The stress and rigor of this course is designed, in part, to prepare students for clinical and practical work situations.

  6. Example Class Formats • One day a week • 8, 9 weeks or 13 weeks • Two day a week • 7 weeks • Three day a week • 5 weeks

  7. One day a week • Class typically meets 8 am-5 pm (Subject to change) • Long day • Do not enroll with the intention of missing a day for another obligation (ie. Saturday class can not be missed for a wedding or weekend vacation. Wednesday class can not be missed for another class or work obligations, for example. Make sure you can attend every session before starting the class.) • In the classroom the entire day • Lunch break • ½ lecture and ½ skills testing • Skills Testing preparation done on own or in self scheduled study groups outside of the classroom • Open labs offered • Schedule TBA

  8. 2/3 Day a Week Class • Typically 9 am-2 pm (Subject to change) • Lecture day • Instruction in class includes speakers, handouts, group discussion, hands-on work, and presentations • Lab day(s) • Use open lab time to practice skills. Minimal demonstration by instructor, video/module examples available and required as a part of learning • Students must attend every class session. Check your schedule before the start of class to ensure you to not have a conflict • Open lab • Schedule TBA

  9. Clinical Rotation • After successful completion of the classroom portion you will complete a 3 day clinical rotation. • Clinical rotations are usually M/T/W, T/W/Th, or similar format. Check your schedule! • Hours are usually 5:45am-4:00pm

State Test Facts • State testing takes place approximately 6 weeks after the completion of NUA class and clinical • Certain facilities hire prior to state testing with certificate of class completion • Two part state test • Written 120 days • Skills • Fee for state test is included in class fees

  11. Class Success • Return demonstrations of skills • You will learn how to perform skills and must successfully demonstrate them for the instructor. Students must practice on their own time and use Open Lab time to learn skills. • Participation • Homework, Clinical dress, On time (reliable transportation), Online participation (watching videos), etc • Content • Quizzes, Midterm, Final • Extra Credit! Do every extra credit assignment  • Group tutoring available! • Study group with classmates highly recommended • Must pass both NUA101 and 170 (clinical portion) to complete program

  12. Costs • Tuition/Fees • (check with financial aid for questions about COF or loans) • Scrubs • Any color/print/style. No “facility” scrubs (with writing from a workplace). Need by 2nd day of class. • Watch • That is able to count seconds • Shoes (white tennis shoes) • No CROCS or Clogs • Mostly white is OK • Text book and State CD/DVD (school bookstore or online) • “Nursing Assistant Today” by FrancieWolgin, 1st Edition • Stethoscope • Does not need to be expensive • Blood pressure cuff (manual) • Not digital or automatic • 2 Towels and 3 washcloths • For personal cares demonstrated on classmates (use your own on yourself) • Background check/physical/TB test**

Class application packet • Pick it up at faculty support or advising office • Make sure to fill it out completely (check physical exam and background check forms) • Must complete it and turn it in no later than 2 weeks before your class starts • This includes your physical exam and TB test! Plan ahead!

Physical Exam • Physical form included in NUA application packet • Physical within one year must have doctor fill out paperwork • Hep B immunization recommended but not required • Must sign waiver if choosing not to get immunization • Two-sided, make sure doctor fills out all sections • TB test must be within 6 months of start of class • Positive TB tests require chest x-ray • Statement from physician no signs or symptoms of active TB

  15. Background Check • American Databank • $20.00-$50.00 for most students • Cost dependent on number of counties lived in and name changes • Background check form included with NUA application packet- This must be done online prior to the class starts date. • 7 years back for NUA program. Contact Patricia with and concerns about this. • Abuse/theft/neglect/violent crimes • ***SBON background check is lifetime. Email program director with questions or concerns about background check.

  16. Schedule Notes • Check FRCC catalog for important registration and payment deadlines! • Acceptance after the deadline payment due within 1 business day • Application packet is due NO LATER than 2 weeks before your class starts • Make sure to meet with advisor ASAP • Check class and Clinical Rotation schedule!
