AAL Call 2014 – Care for the future Applied research, developmentand testing of ICT-based, economicallyand socially viable solutions (products, systems or services) in real life situations which enable and support sustainable care models for older adults: • reconcile increased demand with limited resources; • increase and facilitate the supply of formal and informal care for older adults; • reduce the demand for care through prevention and self-management; • support the shift towards better care at home and in the community. www.nih.gov.hu

End-user involvement • Primary end-users are users of the new product or service (old people) • Secondary end-users are in direct contact with primary end-users (family members, neighbours, friends, carers, care organisations) • Tertiary end-users are private or public organisations that are not directly in contact with AAL products and services, but who contribute in organizing, paying or enabling them (service organizers, social security systems, insurance companies) www.nih.gov.hu

End-user involvement • Planning, development and testing based on user needs and wishes! • User friendly, personalised solutions (the technology involved is often new, complex and unfamiliar to the end-users – explain!) • Motivation to participate, user acceptance • "exit" strategy (end-users may become accustomed to the special attention and services they receive during the project) • Business strategy: right target group (who uses ≠ who pays) www.nih.gov.hu

AAL programme Ethicalissues: • privacy, • control of personal data, • confidentiality, • autonomy and dignity • informed consent: all end-users who participate in an AAL project, through interviews,observations and/or testing of prototypes, should know what they are signing up for and how they can withdraw from the project at any time. www.nih.gov.hu

Challenges • Smart homes and support services for independent living is a market which has an enormous potential and is just appearing now. • This market is already being explored by big technology players like Apple, Google, Philips. AAL projects to develop should probably look carefully for the niches aiming at specific groups of older adults that have at the same time market potential. www.nih.gov.hu

AAL projects with Hungarian participation SafePrivateHomesforElderlyPersons (CARE) • automated recognition and alarming of critical situations (like falls) using a stereovisual sensor (which detects only motion) and real-time processing while preserving the privacy • the technology is used to monitor, analyse, and interpret an elderly's behaviour at home and to automatically send an alarm signal in case of critical situations (e.g. a person falls, or becomes immobilised for a long time, or starts hysteric movements). This sensor technology is integrated in a monitoring system for private homes and nursing homes, including a communication interface and a control station. AAL projects with Hungarian participation Connected Care for Elderly Persons Suffering from Dementia(CCE) The system consists of following hardware and software components: • Philips Net TV that provides a user interface for a digital corkboardapplication (reminding for everyday activities) • A set of sensors that monitor the behaviour and the activities of the assisted person, warning in case of unusual behaviour • A medication dispenser, MemoTray with RFID • A dementia diary that documents daily activities for the assisted person • A middleware platform that integrates all of the data Hungarian members: Innomed Zrt., Hungarian Association for Home Care and Hospice, Budapest University of Technology and Economy www.nih.gov.hu

AAL projects with Hungarian participation Maintaining and MeasuringMentalWellness(M3W) • Develop a mental wellness toolset for self usage, including online computer games, tailored for various kinds of elderly people. • Measure and visualize mental changes, tendencies in an entertaining way. • Give indications (warnings, alarms, reports) to the elderly persons, their relatives, friends or carers.
