  1. Luck’s Ten Heretical Yin/Yang Propositions and Admonitions for Alumni and Development Professionals

  2. 1. Yin: Errant alumni association or campus foundation boards are caused by lack of careful and thoughtful management by paid staff. e.g. Terms of office – board nominees – agendas Yang: Clear expectations – Term limits – Orientation - Agendas

  3. 2. Yin: Spending human and financial resources on alumni records, programs and activities may be good for relationship building and communication. Yang: Making and keeping friends for the purpose of only making and keeping friends is no purpose. What is the “end game” or plan?

  4. 3. Yin: The end game for alumni and development officers is “relationship” building with the college’s graduates or best friends. Yang: Why is it we have very few programs to maintain relationships with retired faculty and staff, as well as, individuals from the community who regularly attend concerts, athletic games, theater and special events on campus?

  5. 4. Yin: We need more passionate and dedicated alumni and development staff to enable us to do more. Yang: Why don’t we enlist retired graduates, faculty and staff to help us part or full time for a modest stipend? e.g. A well revered, retired faculty member would be a great major gift or alumni relations officer.

  6. 5. Yin: Communicating regularly with all your alumni is critical to relationship building. Yang: Why do campuses have alumni dues programs which suggest that if you don’t pay we’re not going to talk to you?

  7. 6. Yin: Increasing enrollment on your campus is important. Yang: Why don’t the alumni and admission offices work as a team? If a business had 32,000 (graduates) unpaid salesman spread around the state they would be winners.

  8. 7. Yin: Why do we worry about what alumni want (surveys, analysis, focus groups etc…) Yang: We need to be just as concerned about what the campus wants. Luck’s 50 Ways to Help the Campus - alumni will ask for the moon as long s they don’t have to pay for it .

  9. 8. Yin: Some of the best relationships your graduates made on your campus was with faculty. Yang: Why don’t we have more faculty/student stories, reunions, alumni club speakers etc…? (Especially those who are older, retired & revered)

  10. 9. Yin: Assisting graduates find jobs is a big plus. Yang: Why is it that very few alumni programs have a joint liaison effort with campus career services by enlisting alums as mentors, contacts, and advisors.

  11. 10. Yin: Communication is essential to all graduates and important constituencies by all means available. Yang: Very few institutions have made and executed bold plan for the use of electronics and media. e.g. An alumni board comprised of graduates all over the country that meet by videoconferencing.
