  1. Pre-Christian Revelation The first phase of revelation found in the Old Testament

  2. Salvation History • The history of God’s self-revelation to man.

  3. Time line • Adam & Eve: Family • Noah: Household • Abraham: Tribe • Moses: Nation • David: Kingdom • Jesus Christ: Church

  4. Christian Revelation • Complete: God made man (Gal. 4:4) (Jn. 1) • Contains the truths revealed by Jesus Christ to his apostles (Acts 1:3) • These truths are called the “mysteries of the faith” • Such as: The Trinity, The Incarnation, and the Eucharist. • What are some others?

  5. Source of Revelation “God graciously arranged that the things he had once revealed for the salvation of all peoples should remain in their entirety, throughout the ages, and be transmitted to all generations” (Die Verbum, 7 – Vatican II)

  6. How has this revelation been transmitted? • Throughout history by deeds and words, through God’s chosen people, culminating in the work of Christ. • Entrusted to the Church by Christ • Matthew 16:18, 28:18-20, 18:17-18 • John 20:21 • 1 Timothy 3:15

  7. One Single Source • God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) • Two modes of transmission • Tradition • Scripture (Bible) • Handout

  8. Define Terms • Sacred Scripture: speech of God as put down in writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit • Sacred Tradition: transmits in it’s entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the Apostles by Christ and the Holy Spirit. (Jn 16:12-14, 2 Thes. 2:15) • By Tradition the books of the Bible are known, and the Scriptures are more thoroughly understood.

  9. Bible • Does not contain all that Jesus said and did (Acts 1:3 for example) • The Books were not begun until some twenty or thirty years after the death of Christ. • Apostles preached • Later some teachings were written • Jn 21:25

  10. Christ’s teachings were passed on to the Apostles • Apostles passed Christ’s teachings on to their disciples • St. Polycarp, St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Clement of Rome : taught by the Apostles • Some of their writings contain some of Jesus’s teachings not explicitly found in scripture.

  11. The Church • Divisions and interpretations of scripture • Who had the authority to decide which was the correct interpretation? • Church • Interpreter and custodian of the Word of God • Promised the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
