  1. Insect Introduction

  2. What do insects have in common? Common Characteristics: Segmented Bodies (9 to 11 Segments) Jointed Appendages Exoskeleton Divided into Head, Thorax, and Abdomen All have mandibles and one pair of antennae Three pairs of jointed legs One or two pairs of wings

  3. The Insect World • Entomology- the study of insects and other terrestrial arthropods • Entomologist classify insects into more then 25 orders based on characteristics such as structure of mouthparts, number of wings, and type of development.

  4. Success of Insect • Live every environment except salt waters • One of the most important factors responsible for the remarkable success of insects is their ability to fly, which enables them to escape from predators and disperse rapidly into new environments. • Very short life spans and produce a large number of eggs.

  5. Insects and people • Damage crops • Spread disease • Recycle nutrients back into the earth, decomposers.

  6. Mouthparts • Labrum and Labium- Like upper and lower lips • -Job is to hold food • Sharp edged- Mandibles • -Job is to tear food • Maxillae- function as set of jaws • Hypopharynx- functions like a tongue

  7. Insect Flight • Wings controlled by contraction of muscles • Faster insects- narrow wings • Insects like Butterflies are built for distance • Monarch Migration 100’s of miles • Synchronous- Larger Insects • -Single volley of nerve impulses stimulates a muscle contraction • Asynchronous- More specialized Insects • -Extremely Rapid Beating Possible • -Flies and bees, 100+ beats per a second

  8. Other Insect Parts • Tympanum- sound sensing organs of many insect • Large membrane over air filled cavity • Vibrates like a drum

  9. What is metamorphosis? • Metamorphosis refers to the way that certain organisms develop, grow, and change form.

  10. Incomplete and Complete • Incomplete metamorphosis- 3 steps • Egg, Nymph, Adult • Complete metamorphosis- 4 steps • Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult

  11. Insect Defense • Warning Coloration- Bright color and patterns that warn of stinging or poison. • Mimicry- Insects imitate colors and patterns more threatening insects, or mimic plants for camouflage.
