  2. definition • “ Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them driven to do something (compulsions)” (PubMed Health Website).

  3. Common facts • Most people who develop OCD show symptoms by age 30. (PubMed Health Website) • About 20% of people with OCD have tics, which suggest the condition may be related to Tourette syndrome. (PubMed Health Website)

Symptoms • Obsessions or compulsions that are not due to medical illness or drug use. • Obsessions or compulsions that cause major distress or interfere with everyday life. • Fear of being contaminated by germs or dirt. • Excessive double checking of objects. • Counting, taping or repeating certain words (to reduce anxiety).

  5. Examples • Checking and rechecking actions • Excessive counting • Excessive fear of germs • The compulsion to repeated wash the hands to ward off infection.

Examples in modern day society • A need to keep everything around you as orderly as possible. • A keenness to correct any mistakes found in nature (such as errors in math problems). • Slight changes to the norm serve as a huge irritation until people with OCD feel they have the urge to fix the differences.

Treatments • Cognitive Therapy- It teaches you healthy and effective ways to obsessive thoughts with resorting to compulsive behavior. • Family Therapy- It can motivate family members and teach them how to help their loved ones. It also help understanding the disorder and reduce family conflicts.

Tips for managing Illness • Tackle the problem directly, never ignore it. • Handle feelings of distress rather than the actual problem. • If symptoms get worse, consult with your doctor. • Learn as much as you can about your illness from reliable resources.(do not rely on others to manage you illness)
