  1. War of Spanish Succession • Who: England, Austria-Hungary, Portugal and Dutch vs. France and Spain • When: 1701-1714 13 years • Why: Other countries did not want France and Spain to unite after Louis XIV grandson was going to take over. • Result:LouisXIV’s grandson was allowed to take over as long as thrones not united. Britain gained land and access to slave trade giving them power. • Power Struggle: Many countries in Europe were concerned that France and Spain uniting would give them too much power. The struggle was over keeping land and power divided so that no one country became too powerful.

  2. Thirty Years War • Who: Ferdinand II – (Member of Hapsburg family and ruled Bohemia) vs. Bohemian Protestants and German Protestants • When: 1618-1648 • Why: Ferdinand was Catholic and tried to shut down Protestant churches. • Result: Peace of Westphalia ended the war and weakened the Hapsburgs, gave France German Territory, Ended religious wars and gave German states religious freedom. • Power Struggle: Religion was the focus and people rebelling against being forced to loose their religion.

  3. War of Austrian Succession • Who: Maria Theresa Austria vs. Frederick II of Prussia • When: 1740-1748 • Why: Fredrick was trying to gain Austrian land of Silesia. He assumed that she would not want to fight since she was a women and had just had a baby. • Result: Prussia gains the territory, but she was able to stop much of their aggression. • Struggle: Many countries such as Britain step in and get involved to help their allies. It is all a competition for land with resources since Silesia had iron ore, textiles and other production items.

  4. Seven Years War • Who: Austria, France and Russia vs. Britain and Prussia • When: 1756-1763 • Why:Maria Theresa makes and alliance with France. Britain feels threatened so they make an alliance with Prussia, so they basically switch alliances. Result: Frederick of Prussia attacked French Saxony. Everyone brought into the war. • Power: These countries were also competing for power over colonies and other territories.

  5. English Civil War • Who: Royalists support King Charles the 1st and the Cavaliers supported a Parliament government. • When: 1642-1649 • Why: Charles the I was an oppressive ruler and tried to impose harsh taxes on the people as well as enforce his religious views. Parliament tried to limit his power so this was a struggle for power. • Result:Oliver Cromwell leads the Cavaliers to victory, tried Charles the I for treason and hung him. • Power: Power should lie in the hands of people or the leaders?

  6. Glorious Revolution • Who: James II (Catholic) and William and Mary (Protestants) • When: 1688 • Why: James II forced Catholicism on the people. Protestants place their support in Mary and William to overthrow. • Result: James II leaves and allows them to gain power. • Power Struggle: Again fighting religious freedom in their country and wanting to get rid of dictators.
