Nothing can be a substitute for love; it is the greatest thing in the world, and it is the foremost concern of the Holy Spirit to pour God’s love into the hearts of his people. Without that love we are nothing, and have nothing to offer to a hungry world.” • David Watson, I Believe in The Church p.175

  3. Knowing the love of God in experience • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” • Luke 10:27 • In total, holistic devotion, our emotions have an integral place

  4. Showing the love of God in action • “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” • 1 John 4:20 • Love is an aspect of our relationship with God that is clothed with deeds • Through love, heaven touches earth

  5. The fruit of growing in love • Love produces a new openness towards Jesus Christ and the working of his Holy Spirit • Love creates the context in which the dynamic dance of cooperation may take place • Love enables the congregation to be effective, credible witnesses for Jesus Christ

The need to embody love • “I have set you an example, that you should do as I have done for you.” • John 13:15 • Leaders – be working examples for others to emulate • May require deliberate choices to cultivate this fruit of the Spirit within • Include and heed those with the spiritual gift of mercy

The need to pray for love • “I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” • John 17:26 • Encourage people to pray for one another that they may each… • Experience the Father’s love for themselves • Grow in love towards others • Be a conduit of his love into a lost and hurting world.

  9. The need to learn about love • Christians need to be reminded and taught about love – we are a forgetful people! • Revelation 2:4-5 ; Good Samaritan ; 1 Corinthians 13 ; 1 John • Love is • Tender & sacrificial • Joyful & heartbroken • Contemplative & practical

  10. The need to remove obstacles to love • It is hard for the flower of love to grow among weeds or in stony ground – we need to clear away such hindrances to growth • Unconfessed sin • Unhealed hurts

  11. Ask the Spirit to guide into love • “Lord, how may we be a witness to the love of Jesus Christ in this neighbourhood?” • Don’t just copy what happens elsewhere • Do ask the Spirit to give guidance for your context
