Summary of Benchmarking Results Compared to peers: • UT CAS had fewer tenured/tenure track faculty in Fall 2007. • UT CAS bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees 2003-2007 were a lower percentage of the total degrees granted. • More than the median number of freshman matriculated to CAS in Fall 2008. These students had a lower average HS GPA. • First year retention rate and six-year graduation rate of CAS undergraduates are lower than the median. • Instructional productivity appears to be higher in some disciplines and lower in others, but more analysis is needed.

  7. Action Areas of Focus • Reconceive the definition of scholarship • Adopt a broader and more balanced definition of scholarly achievement among faculty • Reward the scholarship of teaching and the scholarship of engagement as well as research in tenure and promotion

  8. Action Areas of Focus 2. Recast the curriculum, for both the major and general education • Undertake a serious, far-reaching consideration of what CAS teaches • Teach different things and teach differently • Create increased flexibility in the curriculum • Develop interdisciplinary themes

Rethink and revise teaching and advising • Explore 21st century university teaching methods that help students learn more effectively • Improve student advising to ensure programs of study are appropriate to student needs, interests and abilities • Both actions will increase the number of students who complete their degrees.

Devise new approaches to the use of space • Reconsider space and equipment needs in light of new modes of teaching and learning • Make more effective use of available space • Identify opportunities for shared use of common space and development of synergies • Student retention will increase through coherency of program and function

Strengthen graduate education • Strengthen existing CAS graduate programs and create new novel graduate programs • Provide mentorship and training to the next generation of knowledge producer • Provide graduate students with foundations to succeed • All will increase graduate degree production

Pursuing the Future “The challenge is to pursue a shared vision that allows the College to achieve distinction, become a destination of choice for more undergraduate and graduate students, and to provide them with the knowledge and learning tools to success in the decade ahead.” This vision will be attained through broad participation of CAS faculty in the five areas identified by the Roundtable participants.
