  1. Classification of SuperDARN radar Doppler spectra: Application to the determination of scintillation regions. C. Hanuise and T. Dudok de Wit, LPCE/CNRS, Orléans, France • What is the relation between SuperDARN data and scintillations ? • SuperDARN observations are based on the detection of 10m-wavelength irregularities, i.e. much smaller than those responsible for the scintillations • They are nevertheless due to similar mechanisms and might be related trough cascading from larger to smaller wavelengths • The Doppler spectral width is related to the level of ionospheric turbulence, as is the level of scintillations. Are regions of high spectral width collocated with regions of scintillations (e.g.cusp) ? • Determination of scintillations from radar data • Radar data might be helpful for determining: • the location of irregularities (subject to limitations of HF propagation) • the intensity trough the relation between the scintillation index and the spectral width of Doppler spectra. • For example, are regions of high-spectral width related to regions of high scintillation index ? • Radar data can be classified according to the values of some spectral parameters. • Is there some relation between the radar backscatter classes and scintillation regions ? • Aim of project • The radar classification allows to determine the ionospheric footprints of magnetospheric regions, • on a statistical basis. It is in the process of being extended to individual cases and to real-time determination. • After cross-calibration of scintillation regions and radar backscatter classes, the location of scintillation region • might be determined in real-time from radar data.
