  2. Literature • The dictionary definition of literature is writings in which expression and form are characteristic or essential features in different types of writing.

Types of Literature • There are two main categories of literature: • Fiction-category of literature, drama, film, or other type of creative work is based on imaginary (made up) events. • Examples of Fiction: • Hunger Games • Harry Potter • Star Wars • Nonfiction- category literature, drama, film, essay, and many other types of works that is based on fact and can be proven. • Examples of Nonfiction: • Diary of Anne Frank • Cherokee Warriors by Phillip Steele

Types of Nonfiction • Narrative Nonfiction- information that is based on fact that also tells a story. • Essays- are a short literary composition that reflects the author’s outlook or point; a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative.

  5. Types of Nonfiction Biography Autobiography • Written account of a person’s life • Written by another person • Written in third person narration • Written account of a person’s life • Written by the person • Usually written in first person narration

Types of Fiction • Drama- is the genre of literature that’s subject for compositions is dramatic art in the way it is represented; this genre is stories composed in verse or prose, usually for theatrical performance, where conflicts and emotion are expressed through dialogue and action. • Examples: • Any type of play • Romeo and Juliet • Poetry- is verse and rhythmic writing with imagery that evokes an emotional response from the reader. • Many Different Types of Poetry • For Example: • Haiku • Limeric

Types of Fiction • Mythology-an allegorical narrative; the myths dealing with the gods, demigods, and legendary heroes of a particular people. • Examples: • Greek Mythology • Egyptian Mythology • Folklore- are songs, stories, myths, and proverbs of a person that is usually handed down by word of mouth.

  8. Types of Fiction: Mythology The Odyssey is a perfect example of Greek Mythology. It is a story of Odysseus and his return home from the war. Throughout his quest he runs into many different foes, a Cyclops for example is just one of the many different types of mythological creatures that Odysseus encounters on his journey.

  9. Types of Fiction • Historical Fiction- a story with fictional characters and events based in a historical setting. • This is probably my favorite type of fiction because, I love history. • Examples of Historical Fiction: • Buddha in the Attic by Julie Osaka • The Book Thief by Mark Zusack
