  2. Suggestions for Parents • Take the time to see what your kids are doing online and what their interests are. • Let them teach you about the internet • surf sites with them • help them assess the value and importance of the site • Take the online drivers test with them

  3. Tips for safe internet use • Talk to your kids • go over the rules of safe surfing • establish clear ground rules • post safety rules by the computer • Go to Safekids.com for a safety contract.

  4. Discuss responsible behavior • Compare Unsafe behavior offline to unsafe behavior online • talking to strangers • giving out personal information • getting into fights • lying to teachers and parents

  5. Trouble Zones • Chat Rooms • Messageboards • Email (particularly from unknown sources) • viruses • inappropriate behavior • inappropriate links • Adult websites

General Safety tips • Never give out personal information to people met online especially in public places like chat rooms and bulletin boards, or even contests. • What is personal information: name, age, school, address, phone number, picture, financial information, passwords, or any other information without getting permission

  7. More Tips • Never plan a face-to-face meeting alone with online acquaintances (male or female) • Never respond to offensive or dangerous email, chat, or messageboard communications. • Tell parents or teachers about any online behavior that makes you feel uncomfortable

  8. The computer is public • Place your computer in the family room or another open area of your home
