Details • REPRODUCTION INFORMATION • THE ELEPHANT PRODUCES BABIES EVERY3 TO 4 YEARS HAVING ONE TO TWO BABIES AT A TIME. • THE GESTATION PERIOD IS 22 MONTHES • THE YOUNG ARE ABLE TO HAVE THEIR OWN BABIES AT 10 TO 12 YEARS OLD. • WHY ARE THEY ENDANGERED • ELEPHANTS ARE BEING POUCHED FOR THEIR IVORY FOR JEWELRY, PIANO KEYS, E.T.C. • MANY GRASSLANDS ARE BECOMING CITIES • ELEPHANTS ALSO DON’T BREED WELL IN CAPTIVITY • PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION • THE ELEPHANT HAS LARGE EYES, LARGE TUSKS ON MALES, A TRUNK, LONG TAILS, WITH HARDLY ANY HAIR, AND UP TO EIGHT FEET TALL • FOOD CHAIN • THE ASIAN ELEPHANT IS A PRIMARY CONSUMER GETTING ITS ENERGY DIRECTLY FROM PLANTS • HABITAT • THE ELEPHANT LIVES IN VARIOUS PLACES MAINLY IN INDIA • THE ASIAN ELEPHANT RESTS IN THE DAY TIME UNDER SHADY TREES AND ROLLED THEMSELVES IN MUD AS A FORM OF SUNBLOCK AND SO THAT THEIR PREDATORS CAN’T SENSE THEM • CONSERVATION EFFORTS • ASIAN AND AFRICAN NATIONS SET ASIDE LAND TO PROTECT THE HABITAT AND THE ELEPHANT ITSELF • LAWS FORBID THE HUNTING OF ELEPHANTS IN THESE LANDS AND LAWS LIMIT THE HUNTING OF ELEPHANTS OUTSIDE THESE LANDS. • ADAPTATIONS • THEY HAVE A PREHENSILE TRUNK USED AS AN EXTRA ARM AND THEIR STRONG LEGS ALLOW THE ELEPHANTS WEIGHT TO SIT ON ITS LEGS.
