  2. How many primates are imprisoned in laboratories and dealers? • During 2003 roughly 120,000 primates were incarcerated in U.S. laboratory and dealer operations.

  3. During 2003 the U.S. Federal Government spent a whopping $1.6 Billion dollars on primate experimentation. This averages out to more than $3000 every minute of every day. What does Primate Experimentation Cost?

  4. What is life like in a typical laboratory? A 33 – 55 lb primate lives in a space of 8 square feet (2’ x 4’). This is like a 165 lb human spending their entire life in a space that is 24 square feet (3’ x 8’).

  5. Life in the lab: Rhesus monkeys, squirrel monkeys, baboons, chimpanzees, and other species are subjected to food & water deprivation and confinement in restraint chairs.

  6. Common types of experiments include: Brain-Mapping Drug Addiction Infectious Diseases Psychology/Stress Military – use of chemical weapons, lasers, microwaves, radiation, etc.

  7. Primates in Labs Lose Their Minds: UCLA Primate 9730 (Vervet) “Animal has history of ulceration @ tip of tail following amputation on 3/25/03. Please follow the healing since he recently removed granulated/scabbed over tail tip.” Other injuries included: 3/7/03 severed gastrocnemius tendon; 3/21/03 deep laceration to tail; 3/25 palm laceration; 12/11/03 laceration to upper lip; 12/13/03 laceration to upper lip reopened; 2/11/04 ulcerated tail tip. We believe that this is a clear instance of self-mutilation due to psychological stress.”

  8. The Worst Heartbreak of all: 1300 chimps are locked into U.S. labs. These intelligent creatures who are so much like us spend decade upon decade in mind-numbing confinement. “Karen” a chimpanzee who is caged at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana has spent 47 years inside a laboratory cage.
