  1. College Readiness Senate Bill 1908

  2. Unprepared for College • 55% of all students entering Florida’s public postsecondary institutions require remediation in math, reading, and/or writing. • 94% of students requiring remediation were enrolled in community colleges. • In 2005-06 the total cost of postsecondary remediation was $129.8 million. • The State paid $70 million- more than half- of these costs.

  3. Assessment • Requires that a college readiness assessment shall be administered to all students prior to entering 12th grade who express an interest in pursuing a postsecondary education. • Students who score level 2 or 3 on the reading portion of the grade 10 FCAT, or level 2, 3 or level 4 on the mathematics portion of the grade 10 FCAT • Minimum test scores must be met in order for students to demonstrate readiness.

  4. Assessment • Schools and Community College will administer the CPT to students. • ACT and SAT will also be included as assessments instruments to determine college readiness. (highest score on all tests will be used) • Community College will conduct training sessions to schools for administration of the CPT. • The $10.00 fee will be waived for students on their first attempt.

Remedial Instruction • If students do not meet readiness scores, schools will advise students of any deficiencies and possible 12th grade access to remedial instruction. • The remedial courses for math, reading and writing will take place in their senior year. • Florida Virtual School may be used to provide the remedial instruction.

  7. Remedial Instruction • Students successfully completing the remedial course(s) and achieving the minimum scores on an exit exam and enrolling in a community college within 2 years will not be required to enroll in remediation courses at the college level. • These remedial courses will be designed in a collaborative effort between secondary schools and postsecondary institutions.

  8. Remedial Instruction • Remedial courses certification will be a bachelor’s and certification in the content area. • Only the Math for College for Readiness course will count toward graduation requirement.

  9. Math Remedial Courses Option 1: Math for College Success - Enrollment Guidelines • The first course, (1/2 high school elective credit only), Math for College Success (Course Code Directory course number: 1200410), essentially mirrors the non-college credit, postsecondary developmental course Elementary Algebra, MAT 0024, and is recommended for students entering 12th grade and scoring below “72”on the Math section of the CPT/Accuplacer, below “440” on the SAT Math, or below “19”on ACT Math. Math Remedial Courses Option 2: Mathematics for College Readiness - Enrollment Guidelines • The second course option, (1 high school Math credit; meets high school math core requirement), Mathematics for College Readiness (1200700) more closely mirrors the 3 semester hour college credit, postsecondary “bridge” course, Intermediate Algebra, MAT 1033. This course is most appropriate for students entering 12th grade and scoring between “72-86”on the Math section of the CPT/Accuplacer, between “440-520” on the SAT Math or between “19-22” on the ACT Math. • Course Description FLADOE Memo date 11/14/08, Judith Bilsky, Ed.D.,

Timeline • 2008-09 School Year- College Readiness Assessment takes place for student prior to grade 12. • 2009-2010 School Year- Schools offer remedial courses to seniors. • Are students required to attend the remedial courses in high school? No, but they will have to attend when they enroll at the community colleges.

  14. What does this mean to Citrus County? • The remedial classes will need to be added to the high schools for 09-10. These courses will be ready Fall 2009. • Increase availability of the CPT at all high schools. Identify CPT administrators at each site and conduct training updates. • Identify Free and Reduce Lunch students. For fee wavier.
